Fabric is never chosen in isolation. It has to live with the floor you already have, the curtains you are not replacing and the paint that took three weekends to settle on. A Fusion swatch lets you test all of that properly — held against the skirting, laid on the carpet, seen last thing at night under the bulbs you actually use.

Do bear one thing in mind when you compare. Each of our beds is upholstered to order and cut from its own roll, so expect the finished piece to sit within roughly 10 per cent of the swatch rather than matching it exactly. Scale matters too: a colour spread across a large headboard almost always looks stronger than the same colour in your palm.

If you are choosing for a whole room, order the shades you are considering together. Seeing them against each other, in place, settles the question far faster than a fortnight of deliberating over photographs.
