Beaumont Upholstered Bed: a sleigh shape that asks for length, not width
This guide is about
Beaumont Upholstered Bed
A sleigh bed is a shape before it is anything else, and shapes take up room. The Beaumont has a scrolled sleigh headboard, diamond tufted and set with crystal buttons, answered at the other end by a rolled foot. Both of those curves lean outwards, and that is why the figure to check on this bed is not the width. It is the length.
The length is the deciding measurement
- Single 3FT – 99 cm wide by 231 cm long
- Small Double 4FT – 127 cm wide by 231 cm long
- Double 4FT6 – 144 cm wide by 231 cm long
- King 5FT – 158 cm wide by 240 cm long
- Super King 6FT – 189 cm wide by 240 cm long
Every one of the first three sizes is 231 cm long, and the king and super king reach 240 cm. Those are the finished figures across the bed at its widest point. Before anything else, measure the wall the bed will stand against and then measure straight out from it: 231 cm is a long way into a room, and the rolled foot arrives before you expect it. Doors that open inwards, the end of a fitted wardrobe, a radiator under a window and the route past the bed to a window seat are all things a sleigh shape finds.
The width is comparatively forgiving. A double at 144 cm is tidy for the presence it has, because the curves go front to back rather than out to the sides.
Two curves that answer each other
The scrolled headboard is diamond tufted with crystal buttons across it, and the rolled foot repeats the sweep without the buttoning, so the bed reads as one continuous line rather than a tall board with an afterthought at the other end. It is a traditional idea done cleanly, and it is the reason this bed suits a room with a bit of height and plain walls: there is already enough going on in the silhouette.
A frame, with nothing underneath
The mattress sits down inside an upholstered surround, with the side rails and the foot end finished in the same cloth as the headboard. There is no storage in the base. On a sleigh shape that is the right decision, because the low unbroken line between the two curves is most of the effect. If you want the shape and the storage, the ottoman version of the Beaumont lifts its whole platform instead, and both sit near each other in our upholstered beds range.
Twenty-six colourways, and what tufting does to cloth
The Beaumont is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, with the headboard, base and sides all finished in your choice. Diamond tufting on a curve is where a plush velvet shows off, since every button pulls light into a different direction; the Coniston, Chenille, Naples and Linoso weaves give a flatter, more period reading of the same shape. Cream Naples and Almond Coniston keep it soft; Emerald Coniston or Black Plush Velvet make it the only thing in the room. Ask us for a sample before you choose between two dark shades.
Delivery and the mattress
Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it, and we send beds in Scotland and far beyond, with the charge shown at checkout. Mattresses are sold separately: a deep mattress changes how much of the scrolled board you still see above the pillows, so it is worth thinking about the two together, and the mattress range is the place to compare tensions.
The size guide on the Beaumont Upholstered Bed page draws the bed from the side and from above at a single scale, which is the quickest way to see what 240 cm really does to a room.
