Wycombe Upholstered Bed: Tall Wings, Matching Footboard, and Why It Measures Wide
This guide is about
Wycombe Upholstered Bed
The Wycombe upholstered bed is the most architectural frame we make. Deep diamond buttoning sits between two tall wings, and the footboard is buttoned to match, so the bed encloses the mattress on three sides and reads as a piece of furniture rather than a platform with a board behind it.
Wings and a matching footboard
The wings are the thing people notice. They rise at either side of the buttoned centre panel and give the headboard a front-facing depth, which is what makes the Wycombe hold a large wall on its own. The footboard repeats the buttoning, so the bed is finished at both ends. That is unusual now, and it changes how a room works: a footboard gives the bed a definite edge and stops it drifting visually into the rest of the floor.
The whole frame is upholstered in one cloth. The headboard, the surround and the sides are all finished in the fabric you choose, so the bed arrives as one object rather than a frame and a board that very nearly match. The headboard listed for the Wycombe is the tall version, which is what the wings are built around.
Measure the outside, not the mattress
This is the single most important paragraph in this guide. A bed with wings, a buttoned surround and a footboard takes up noticeably more floor than its mattress size suggests, and the Wycombe's finished dimensions are:
- Single 3FT, 99 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Small Double 4FT, 132 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Double 4FT6, 143.5 cm wide by 212 cm long
- King 5FT, 158 cm wide by 222 cm long
- Super King 6FT, 189 cm wide by 222 cm long
A Double at 143.5 cm wide and 212 cm long is a bigger footprint than many people expect from a 4FT6, and the King and Super King are 222 cm long. Measure the alcove, the door swing and the gap you want to walk through, and measure to these numbers rather than to the mattress. There is a size guide on the product page with the bed drawn from the side and from above, every size at the same scale, which makes the comparison much easier than a list does.
Twenty-five colourways
The Wycombe is upholstered to order in any of 25 colourways. On a frame with this much buttoning the cloth does real work. A plush velvet sinks into each diamond and lifts off the raised centres, so the pattern is legible from the doorway and the bed becomes the focus of the room. A flatter weave calms the buttoning right down and lets the silhouette of the wings carry it instead, which suits a bedroom that already has a strong wallpaper or a lot of pattern elsewhere.
Wings also throw shade onto the centre panel, so the colour inside them sits darker than on a flat sample. If you are choosing between two close shades, ask us to see the cloth rather than trusting a screen.
Who it is for
It suits a bedroom with the floor to give it, and a wall the bed can be the whole answer to. It is not the frame for a box room, and it is not a storage bed. The base carries no drawers and no lift, which keeps the lines low and lets the buttoning do the work. If you want the Wycombe's look with storage underneath, there is an ottoman version of the same design whose platform lifts on gas struts.
Anyone comparing beds in Glasgow is better off standing beside a winged frame than looking at one, because photographs flatten the wings and hide exactly the depth you are paying for. We ship beds in Scotland and well beyond it, and delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 past that.
Mattresses are sold separately, which on this frame is a point in its favour: the mattress sits down inside the surround, so its depth changes how much of the buttoning you see above the sides, and you can choose accordingly. The rest of the range is on our upholstered beds page, and sizes and fabrics for this one are selected on the Wycombe product page.
