The Waverley Ottoman Divan Bed: Crystal Buttoning Above Full-Footprint Storage
This guide is about
Waverley Ottoman Divan Bed
A bed that gives you back the floor space a chest of drawers would have taken is a different proposition from a bed that merely looks good. The Waverley ottoman divan bed is built on that trade. The whole area beneath the mattress becomes one lined compartment, and a crystal-buttoned headboard does the decorative work above it.
How the storage actually opens
The base lifts as a single piece. Gas struts take the weight of the mattress and the top swings up from the side, opening the full footprint of the bed in one movement. There are no drawers and no runners, and that is the practical difference between the two kinds of storage bed. A drawer needs clear floor alongside the bed to pull out into. A side-lifting lid does not, so the Waverley can sit tight into a corner, or with one long side against a wardrobe, and still open properly.
What you end up with is the entire plan of the bed as usable space rather than the slices a drawer set can reach. Spare duvets, suitcases and the half of the wardrobe that only appears in winter all live in the same place. If headroom above the bed is tight, or a sloping ceiling is involved, ask us about the arc of the lid for the size you are considering rather than judging it from a photograph.
The headboard
Because the base has been given over to storage, the headboard is where the Waverley gets its character. It is crystal-buttoned diamond tufting held inside a plain border, with an upright post at each side framing the panel. The buttons catch light, so the tufting reads differently in daylight and under a bedside lamp instead of sitting flat.
The headboard is upholstered in the same cloth as the base and the sides, so the bed arrives as one piece rather than a frame and a board that very nearly match. The headboard offered on the Waverley is the 54 inch floor-standing version, which carries down to the floor behind the bed instead of relying on the base alone.
Six sizes, and the number people forget
- Small Single 2FT6, 75 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- Single 3FT, 90 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- Small Double 4FT, 120 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- Double 4FT6, 135 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- King 5FT, 150 cm wide by 205 cm long
- Super King 6FT, 184 cm wide by 205 cm long
Those are the finished dimensions of the bed at its widest point, not mattress sizes, so measure the room against them rather than against the mattress you already own. Length is the figure people forget. At 196.5 cm for the four smaller sizes and 205 cm for King and Super King, the bed needs its full length clear, because an ottoman cannot be shuffled sideways to dodge a radiator once it is in place. The product page carries a size guide drawn from the side and from above, with every size to the same scale.
Twenty-six colourways
The Waverley is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, drawn from the Coniston, Naples, Chenille, Linoso and Plush Velvet cloths. Every part of the bed finished in fabric, which means the headboard, the base and the sides, comes in the colour you choose.
The buttoned headboard is worth thinking about here. A plush velvet such as Steel, Mocca or Mink sinks into the diamonds and throws the light back off the raised panels, so the pattern is obvious from across the room. Flatter weaves like Emerald Coniston, Slate Grey Naples or Silver Linoso play the tufting down and let the shape of the border carry the bed instead. If you are torn between two, ask us to see the cloth before you commit, because screens are honest about pattern and unreliable about depth of colour.
Who the Waverley suits
It suits anyone whose storage problem is bigger than their bedroom. Among ottoman beds, a side-lifting base is the one to pick when the bed has to live in a corner or a box room; a drawer base makes more sense when you open it daily and have the floor to spare. Plenty of customers comparing divan beds end up here once they measure the pull-out space a drawer actually needs. You can see the rest of the range on our ottoman divan beds page, where the same lift mechanism appears under several different headboards.
Mattresses are sold separately, so the tension is your choice rather than ours. If you are shopping for beds in Glasgow, delivery is free within 50 miles of our store and £50 beyond that, and you are welcome to come and lift a base yourself before deciding. When you have settled on a size and a colour, the Waverley is configured on its own product page, which prices the combination as you build it.
