Wall Panel 92E Black: shadow lines, substrate and what shows

Wall Panel 92E Black: shadow lines, substrate and what shows — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Wall Panel 92E - Black - Outdoor - 240cm - (1 pack / 12pcs)

View the product

Black cladding is chosen for depth rather than colour. Wall Panel 92E - Black - Outdoor - 240cm, code AWS-OWP92E, has a face of 2.4cm slats with 1.4cm between them, and on a dark panel that rhythm of line and shadow is most of what you see from the far side of a garden.

Shadow does the work on a dark face

A pale slatted wall shows its texture through tonal variation across the face. A black one does not: the slat faces and the spaces between them read as nearly the same tone in flat light, and the panel only comes alive when the light is low and raking across it. That is worth knowing when you choose the elevation. A north-facing wall in constant shade will read as a flat dark plane most of the day, which can be exactly what you want behind planting or a water feature, and can be disappointing if you expected the texture to carry the wall on its own.

Settle what is behind it

The listing gives a 1.4cm space between slats on a panel listed at 1.2cm thick, but it does not say whether that space is a recess in a solid board or an open gap through to the fixing surface. The difference matters here more than on any other colour in the profile, because a pale batten or a light render showing through a black face is the one thing that will undo the effect. Ask the shop which it is. If it does run through, the fix is straightforward, but only if you know in time: dark battens, or a dark-painted substrate, behind the panel.

The figures, as published

FigureAs listed
Panel size16 x 240 x 1.2cm
Panels per pack12
Area per pack4.61m²
Slat width2.4cm
Space between slats1.4cm

Divide your wall area by 4.61m² and round up to a whole pack. The slat and the space together give a 3.8cm repeat, which is the figure to line up against a door reveal or an outdoor light if the wall has one. The three dimensions are printed without labels, so have the shop confirm which is the cover width before a cutting list is set.

Parts, and the other colours

The description states that trim pieces are sold separately and that brackets are recommended for installation, naming the Wall Panel 92 Trim - 240cm in packs of ten and the Bracket For Outdoor Panels 73/83/84/92 in packs of fifty. No bracket spacing is published, so the quantity per panel is a shop question. If black is too strong for the elevation, Wall Panel 92B - Grey - Outdoor - 240cm and Wall Panel 92D - Dark Oak - Outdoor - 240cm share every figure above.

Not published, worth asking

The material is given as engineered composite, UV resistant, with textured slats; the polymer is not named and no wood content is stated. There is no figure for surface temperature in direct sun, which people reasonably ask about on black cladding, and none for fire performance, weight or cleaning. None of those are hidden, they are simply not on the listing, and the shop can put the supplier's answer in front of you.
