Wall Panel 32K Shadow Oak: judging a finish nobody defines

Wall Panel 32K Shadow Oak: judging a finish nobody defines — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Wall Panel 32K - Shadow Oak - Premium 3-Sided Acoustic - 240cm - (1 pack / 4pcs)

View the product

Oak, dark oak and walnut are names most people can picture. Shadow oak is not one of them, and the listing for Wall Panel 32K names the finish without describing it anywhere in the text. That is no reason to pass the board over, but it does change the order you do things in. Settle the colour first; the measuring is the easy part.

Shadow oak is a name, not a description

Nothing on the listing says whether shadow oak is a grey-brown, a smoked tone, an oak with a darker grain pulled out of it, or something else again. Three ways to pin it down before you spend anything. Look at the photographs on the product page at full size and on a screen you trust rather than a phone in bright sun. Ask the shop to describe it against a finish you do know, which is usually the quickest answer. And if the tone has to work with a floor or a worktop you already own, ask whether a sample can be sent, because no photograph settles a near match.

One related detail: the gaps between the slats show the felt behind them, and the felt colour is not published either. On a darker board that is the difference between the gaps disappearing into shadow and the gaps reading as a stripe in another colour. Worth asking in the same conversation.

What the listing does specify

  • 60 x 240 x 1.7cm per board, with the description confirming 17mm as the thickness and the product name confirming 240cm as the length.
  • Four boards in a pack, covering 5.76m².
  • An HDF slat body with a felt backing.
  • Veneer on three sides of every visible slat, though the material of that veneer is not named.
  • Thicker than the standard panels in the shop, which the description states plainly.

What is absent is the slat width and the gap between slats. If you intend to run this board next to a different profile, or to continue a wall somebody else started, that is the measurement to ask for first.

Covering a wall in 60cm boards

Each board runs the full height of an ordinary room, so you are only ever counting width. Four boards make 2.4 metres; six make 3.6 metres; eight make 4.8 metres and use two packs with nothing left. Where the width is not a multiple of 0.6, one board is cut along its length, and on a slatted face that cut runs through the pattern rather than along a tidy edge, so put it where it is least seen or balance a part board at both ends. Measure the height in two or three places as well: boards are 240cm and older rooms are rarely square, so knowing you have 243cm at one end saves an unpleasant surprise.

The board also comes forward off the wall by 1.7cm, which is enough to notice at the skirting, at a door architrave on the same wall, at a shallow window reveal and at every socket faceplate. Resolve those on the sketch, not on the day.

Where it sits in the group

Shadow oak runs through more than one profile, which makes a direct comparison easy: Wall Panel 41K in shadow oak is also listed as shadow oak, so looking at both sets of photographs tells you more about the colour than either does alone. If shadow oak turns out darker than the room wants, Wall Panel 32W in light oak and Wall Panel 32H in oak are the other oak tones in the same group. The wider selection is in slat and acoustic panels, and the rest of the panelling, the seamless planks and wall boards included, sits in wall panelling.

Confirming it, then ordering

Confirm the finish, count the boards, round up to packs of four, and add the edge trim and a fixing suited to your wall. The description mentions sound absorption but quotes no measured figure, so treat the acoustic side as a bonus unless the shop can supply the supplier's test data. Ask about the current lead time at the same time. Delivery is free within 50 miles of the Glasgow store and £50 beyond it.

When the colour is settled and the board count is on paper, order Wall Panel 32K in shadow oak for the whole wall in one order.
