Wall Panel 31H Oak: panelling a home office or studio wall — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Wall Panel 31H - Oak - Premium 3-Sided Acoustic - 240cm - (1 pack / 4pcs)

View the product

Of all the walls people panel, the one behind a desk is among the most awkward. It carries the camera's background, usually a shelf or two, a run of cables, and whatever is making the room echo on a call. Wall Panel 31H in oak is a reasonable answer to the background and the echo, and the cables and the shelf can be planned around it, as long as you do that in the right order.

A desk wall, board by board

  1. Measure the wall width and divide by 0.6. That is your board count, because each board covers 60cm of width and runs the full 240cm height.
  2. Round up to packs of four. Five boards is two packs; eight boards is two packs with nothing over.
  3. Mark the desk, the shelf heights and the socket positions on a sketch before deciding where the cut board goes. Put the part board at the end that will be behind the desk rather than in open view.
  4. Decide the cable route now. Once a board is fixed, a cable has to come out at a point you chose.
  5. Check the ceiling height in two or three places. Boards are 240cm, so a taller wall needs a deliberate break.

The one question the listing cannot answer for you is fixings. Nothing on it says whether a shelf bracket, a monitor arm or a television plate can be fixed through the panel, or whether the fixing has to reach the wall behind. Given the board is 1.7cm thick with a felt back, that is a question for the shop before you buy, not after the shelves are on order. If the lighting matters as much as the shelving, the shop lists panel lighting separately.

If this is a commercial job

The description mentions offices and studios, and residential and commercial use alike. Worth knowing before you specify it in a workplace: the listing quotes no reaction-to-fire classification, no absorption coefficient and no test reference of any kind. For a home office that is unlikely to trouble anyone. For a fit-out being signed off by somebody else, those are the first documents that will be asked for, so request them from the shop and have them in hand before the panels are on a schedule.

That right-hand column is not a criticism of the panel. It is simply the list of things to ask about, and a shop that sells the range can answer most of it from the supplier's own documentation.

Oak, and the light that lands on it

A slatted face is a row of small shadows, so it changes through the day far more than a flat wall does. Side light across the slats makes the texture read strongly; light straight at the wall flattens it almost completely. If the room has one window on the same wall as the panelling, expect the near end to look deeper in tone than the far end, which is not a fault of the panel. A mid-tone oak takes that better than a very dark face, which swings darker still in poor light.

The rest of the group, and the order

In the same board you have Wall Panel 31D in dark oak and Wall Panel 31T in walnut, while Wall Panel 32H in oak is listed in the same oak and carries the same written specification under a different model number, so the photographs are the only thing that will show you how the two faces differ. The group is listed under slat and acoustic panels. Delivery is free within 50 miles of the Glasgow store and £50 beyond it.

With the board count settled and the fixing question answered, order Wall Panel 31H in oak for the full wall, plus the edge trim, in one order.
