Verwood Ottoman Divan Bed

The Verwood headboard does something most of our range does not: it comes forward. Vertical channels fill the centre panel, and two tall wings stand proud at either side, so the board frames the pillows instead of sitting flat behind them. On a bed against a plain wall that is the difference between a headboard and a feature. The ottoman divan beds page lists it beside the flatter styles if you want to see the contrast, and the Verwood ottoman divan bed listing has it from every angle.

The wings are practical as well as decorative

A winged headboard is warmer to sit against and it keeps pillows from sliding off the sides, which is a small thing until you read in bed every night. It does, though, need thinking about at the planning stage. The wings add width at the head of the bed and they project forward, so a bed in an alcove or between two wardrobes wants measuring at headboard height as well as at base height. The Verwood is specified with a 54 inch headboard.

The base lifts in one piece

Gas struts take the weight of the mattress and the top swings up from the side, opening the full footprint of the bed as one lined compartment. No drawers, no runners, and nothing that needs to clear a wall or a wardrobe door, which means the storage still works with the bed pushed into a corner. For bulky, seasonal, awkwardly shaped things it is the most useful storage in the house, and it is the most you can get under a bed of this size.

Set against drawer divan beds, the trade is straightforward: drawers give you sorted compartments and a shallow reach, a lifting base gives you one deep space and asks for headroom.

Six sizes

Measured across the finished bed at its widest point:

  • Small Single 2FT6 - 79 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Single 3FT - 94 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Small Double 4FT - 124 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Double 4FT6 - 139 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • King 5FT - 154 cm wide by 200 cm long
  • Super King 6FT - 188 cm wide by 200 cm long

Each width runs a little over the size name, so a 4FT6 Verwood takes 139 cm of wall. Work from the figures above when you plan, not from the 4FT6. The four smaller sizes are 191.5 cm long and the king and super king are 200 cm. There is a full size guide on the product page with every size drawn from the side and from above to the same scale.

Twenty-six colourways

The Verwood is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, and the headboard, base and sides are all finished in the cloth you choose. Vertical channelling between the wings catches light down its length, which plush velvets in Steel, Mink, Black or Cream exaggerate and the chenilles and Silver Linoso soften. Coniston and Naples cover the middle ground, from Almond and Cream to Charcoal and Slate Grey. If the room is already busy, let the shape carry it and keep the cloth plain.

Ordering it

Mattresses are sold separately, so the tension and depth are your call, and the flat platform will take a deep one. Measure for the lift as well as the floor: the lid swings up from the side and needs clear air above the bed.

Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it, one flat charge rather than a rate per mile, which is worth knowing if you are buying beds in Scotland from outside the central belt. When you have a size and a cloth in mind, the Verwood is configured here.
