V Console Table: hallway depth, height and what fits under it

V Console Table: hallway depth, height and what fits under it — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

V Console Table

View the product

The V Console Table is listed in one size: 110 x 33.5 x 80cm. That is the whole of the published specification. It is a bought-in piece the shop supplies, so the published detail is the supplier's, and here that is the size. What follows is what those figures mean against a real wall, and where the listing is silent.

Read in the usual order that is 110cm wide, 33.5cm deep and 80cm tall, a sensible shape for a console. The listing does not label the figures, so if you are working to the centimetre, confirm with the shop which number is which before you order.

What 33.5cm of depth does in a hallway

Depth decides whether a console works in a corridor. At 33.5cm it takes a third of a metre off the width of the passage, so measure the narrowest point of the hall rather than the widest, and measure off the face of the skirting board, not the plaster. A table standing proud of its skirting sits further out than the number suggests.

  • Leave a walkway you can carry a suitcase down, measured after the 33.5cm is gone.
  • Check the swing of every door on that wall, including a cupboard you rarely open.
  • Look for a radiator: a table hard against one blocks the heat and the valve.
  • Note the sockets. A 33.5cm top leaves little room to reach behind for a lamp plug.

80cm high: above it and under it

An 80cm top lands at about hip height for most adults, which is why consoles at this height work as a drop-off point by a front door and as a surface under a wall mirror. If you are hanging a mirror above it, settle the gap you want below the frame first and mark it on the wall in tape.

Underneath, 80cm is the overall height, not the gap below the top, and no listing here publishes an under-top clearance. The Roma Mirrored Stool is the obvious partner from this part of the catalogue, listed at 41 x 33 x 42cm with the figures unlabelled, so measure it against the underside of the table rather than trusting the figures. For a corner rather than a wall, the Roma Pedestal 33 is listed at 49 x 49 x 69cm: a square footprint that takes far less wall than 110cm, though 49cm reaches further into the room than this console's 33.5cm. The Heart Console Table (LED) is listed at 120 x 36 x 82cm with white LED.

What the listing does not say

  • No material or finish. The piece is filed under Mirrored Furniture, which tells you which part of the catalogue it sits in, not what any of its surfaces or edges are made of.
  • The name suggests a shape; the listing does not describe it. The photographs on the product page are the better guide.
  • No weight, no load figure, no shelf or drawer count, and nothing on assembly or wall fixing.

Ask the shop to confirm any of those before you commit. Better that than ordering on an assumption.

Measuring and ordering

Measure the wall, the narrowest point of the walkway, and the route the table has to travel: the front door, the turn at the foot of the stairs, any doorway narrower than its 110cm length. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. When the numbers work, the full set of photographs is on the V Console Table product page.
