Torino Ladder Back Chair (KD): measurements and room fit
This guide is about
Torino Ladder Back Chair (KD)
The Torino Ladder Back Chair (KD) comes in a single listed size, 46 x 49 x 105cm, with one further note from the listing: built chairs have lighter seats and KD chairs have darker seats. There is no written detail beyond that, so everything below works from the measurements.
Reading 46 x 49 x 105cm
The figures are given in that order without labels. The 105cm can only be the overall height, though the listing does not say what it is measured to; the 46cm and 49cm are the width and the depth, and the listing does not say which way round.
| Figure | What it decides |
|---|---|
| 46cm | The narrower plan figure. If it is the width, it sets how many chairs fit along a table edge |
| 49cm | The larger plan figure. Allow this much floor for each chair whichever way round the two are |
| 105cm | Overall height, though the figure is not labelled |
Confirm the width and depth with the shop if you are fitting chairs into an alcove or between a table and a run of units, where a few centimetres change the answer.
What a 105cm back does to a room
This is a tall chair, and at 105cm the back stands well above a normal dining table. Two things follow from that:
- The backs are part of the view across an open-plan room, not hidden behind the table. The back is what people will actually see.
- It will not slide under a low windowsill, a radiator shelf or a wall-mounted shelf. Measure the height of anything the chair backs onto.
Working out how many you need
Use the 46cm figure as your unit. Four chairs touching need 184cm of clear table side and six need 276cm, or 196cm and 294cm if the two plan figures are the other way round, and you should add a gap between each one so people are not sitting shoulder to shoulder. Check where your table legs sit as well, because a leg set at the corner is no problem while a thick leg set in from the end can cost you a place.
Two figures are missing from the listing and both matter:
- Seat height. Not stated. Measure from the floor to the underside of your table top and ask the shop for the seat height so you know the chair tucks under and your knees clear.
- Seat material and frame. Not stated either, beyond the note about the lighter and darker seats. If you need to know what you are cleaning, ask before you buy.
Leave the larger plan figure, 49cm, plus a stride behind the chair for a walkway, and more if the chair backs onto a door.
What it works with
The ladder back is the more detailed of the two Torino chairs in our dining chairs, and the Torino Cross Back Chair (KD) shares the same 46 x 49 x 105cm size, so the two can be mixed around one table, ladder backs at the ends and cross backs along the sides, without the heights falling out of line. The Lucca Cross Back Chair (KD) is the comparison to make if you prefer a plainer back, and the Siena Tub Chair is the one to look at if you want something upholstered instead.
Before you order
Measure the table side, the floor-to-underside height and the gap behind the chairs, then order the set together so the seats match. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. Photographs and the current price are on the Torino Ladder Back Chair (KD) page.
