Torino Cross Back Chair (KD): sizes, fit and what to check
This guide is about
Torino Cross Back Chair (KD)
The Torino Cross Back Chair (KD) is listed in one size, 46 x 49 x 105cm, and the listing adds one more fact worth knowing: built chairs have lighter seats, KD chairs have darker seats. That is the whole of the written detail, so everything below works from those numbers.
The three figures, and which is which
The size is given as 46 x 49 x 105cm without labels. The 105cm figure can only be the overall height; the other two are the width and the depth, in an order the listing does not state, and the listing does not say what the height is measured to either.
| Figure as listed | What it governs in the room |
|---|---|
| 46cm | The narrower plan figure. If it is the width, it is the one that decides how many places fit along a table side |
| 49cm | The larger plan figure. Allow this much floor for each chair whichever way round the two are |
| 105cm | Overall height, though the figure is not labelled |
If a centimetre either way matters for an alcove or a run of chairs along a wall, ask the shop to confirm which figure is the width and which is the depth.
How many fit along your table
Work from the 46cm figure. Four chairs side by side need 184cm of clear run before you allow any gap between them at all, and six need 276cm. If the two plan figures turn out to be the other way round, the same rows need 196cm and 294cm, so work to those if your table side is tight. Measure your table side, subtract the leg positions if the legs are set in from the corners, and divide what is left.
Two more measurements decide the rest:
- Table top underside to the floor. The listing does not give a seat height, and that is the figure which decides whether the chair tucks fully under. Ask the shop for it before you commit.
- Table edge to the wall behind. Allow the larger plan figure, 49cm, plus room for someone to stand up and step back, or the chair will knock the skirting every time it is pulled out.
The 105cm height is the one people forget. It stands well above a normal dining table, so the backs are part of the view across the room, and they will sit in front of a low windowsill or a radiator shelf rather than under it.
Built or KD, and what the listing confirms
The listing names this chair KD and tells you plainly that KD chairs have darker seats while built chairs have lighter seats. It does not say whether the chair arrives assembled or whether any tools are needed, so if that matters for your hallway or your lift, ask the shop to confirm it rather than assuming. Nothing on the listing describes the seat material, the frame material or the finish, so those are questions for the shop too.
What it sits with
The cross back shape is the plainer end of our dining chairs, and it reads well against a simple rectangular table rather than a heavily detailed one. If you want the same size in a different back, the Torino Ladder Back Chair (KD) is listed at the same 46 x 49 x 105cm, which makes it easy to mix the two around one table without the heights disagreeing. For a similar cross back in another range, compare the Lucca Cross Back Chair (KD), and for something upholstered and softer look at the Oslo Chair.
