Torino 2+3 Drawer Chest: measurements, fit and what it suits

Torino 2+3 Drawer Chest: measurements, fit and what it suits — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Torino 2+3 Drawer Chest

View the product

The Torino 2+3 is the middle chest of the three in this range: five drawers in a footprint under a metre wide. The listed size is 85 x 40 x 96cm. That measurement is all the listing gives, so the eight photographs on the Torino 2+3 Drawer Chest page are where to judge the finish and the handles. The name tells you the layout is two drawers over three; it does not say whether the upper two are half-width, so check the photographs.

What 85 x 40 x 96cm means in a real room

One caveat runs through everything below. The listing prints three figures and labels none of them. The middle figure is 40 on all three Torino chests, and the pattern across the range reads as width, depth and height in that order, which is how this post uses them. The listing itself does not say so, so treat it as a reading rather than a label and confirm the orientation with the shop before you order to a tight alcove.

At 85cm the chest clears most alcoves and sits easily between a bed and a wall, and a 40cm depth is shallow enough not to crowd a landing. The figure people forget is the floor in front: allow the depth again so a drawer can come fully out with someone standing at it, so plan on roughly 80cm front to back rather than 40. The 96cm height sits above the top of most mattresses, so the chest does not disappear beside a bed. Going under a window, measure the sill first; hanging a mirror over it, measure from 96cm up to the ceiling.

How it compares with the other two Torino chests

ChestSize as listedDrawersShape in the room
Torino 2+385 x 40 x 96cmFiveUpright, under a metre wide
Torino 5 Drawer55 x 40 x 116cmFiveTall and narrow, for a tight gap
Torino 6 Drawer128 x 40 x 78cmSixWide and low, a long surface

All three list the same 40cm middle figure, so on that reading two of them along one wall would line up at the front.

Measure these three things first

  1. The gap, at skirting height and again at the top. A skirting board holds furniture proud of the wall, and the listing does not say whether the base is a plinth to the floor or set back.
  2. The route in: front door, hall turn, stair quarter-landing, bedroom door. An 85cm case is the width to check at the turn.
  3. The door swing, so an open door does not land on an open drawer.

What the listing does not say

  • Material, finish and colour name.
  • Handle style, and whether handles arrive fitted.
  • Soft-close runners or plain, and the internal drawer sizes.
  • Whether it is delivered assembled, and whether an anti-tip wall fixing is included.

This is a range the shop supplies rather than one of its own pieces, so the answers come from the supplier's specification. Ask the shop and it will check, along with the current lead time.

What it goes with

The range runs through the bedroom. The Torino Bedside 3 Drawer at 47 x 37 x 62cm sits close to the chest's depth and well under its height, and the Torino Dressing Table at 107 x 44 x 75cm adds a lower surface to sit at. If the proportions here are wrong for your room, there is more in chests of drawers and across bedroom furniture. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.

If you have about 85cm of wall and want five drawers without the height of the tall chest, the Torino 2+3 Drawer Chest is the one in this range shaped for it.
