Thornbury Kids Chesterfield Ottoman Divan Bed

If you have ever tried to get a duvet, a sleeping bag and a box of Lego into bedside drawers, you already understand the argument for this bed. The Thornbury kids ottoman turns the entire area under the mattress into one lined compartment, with nothing dividing it and nothing to slide out. The Thornbury kids Chesterfield ottoman divan bed page shows the base open.

Drawers or a lifting base

This is the real decision in a child's room, and it comes down to geometry rather than capacity. Drawers need clear floor in front of them; a lifting base needs clear air above it. Children's floors fill up and children's walls usually do not, which is why ottoman beds tend to stay usable in a room where drawer bases quietly stop being opened.

Gas struts take the weight of the mattress, and the top swings up from the side. There are no runners and nothing that has to clear a wardrobe door, so the bed can sit in a corner or hard against a wall and still open fully. It is the most storage you can get under a bed of this size.

A buttoned headboard at the right scale

The headboard is crystal-buttoned diamond tufting, with the side posts standing slightly above the centre panel so the top has a stepped outline. Everything finished in cloth, the headboard, the base and the sides, is upholstered in the single fabric you choose, so the bed is handmade to order as one piece and there is no near-miss between a board and a base. Two headboard heights appear in the listing, a 26 inch board and a 54 inch floor standing board; check the configurator for the size you want, and remember a floor standing board needs a little depth behind the bed.

Four sizes

  • Small Single 2FT6 - 75 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Single 3FT - 90 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Small Double 4FT - 120 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Double 4FT6 - 135 cm wide by 191.5 cm long

All four are 191.5 cm long, and the widths are the finished bed at its widest point. Because this is a divan-style base rather than a frame with a surround, those widths are close to the mattress itself, which is why a 2FT6 at 75 cm can rescue a box room. The product page carries a full size guide with the bed drawn from the side and from above, every size to the same scale, and the side view is the one to look at here: it shows the arc the lid travels through.

What to measure

Three things. The floor area, obviously. Then the height available above the bed on the side the lid opens from, allowing for a window ledge, a radiator shelf or a sloping ceiling. Then somewhere for an adult to stand while it is open, because an adult will be the one doing the lifting at first.

Twenty-six colourways

The bed is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways. Buttoned tufting shows cloth more than any other headboard shape, so velvets in Pink, Blue, Emerald or Mocca give deep shadow in each diamond, while Cream Chenille, Mink Naples and Silver Linoso stay quiet in a room that will be redecorated around the bed. Ask us for samples if you are matching curtains or a carpet.

Delivery and what else to look at

Mattresses are sold separately, so the depth and tension are yours to pick. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond that, a single flat charge rather than a mileage rate.

If you are still choosing between a lifting base and drawers, compare the kids ottoman divan beds with the drawer versions in the same headboard styles, since they look identical made up and behave completely differently. When you are ready, the Thornbury kids ottoman is configured here.
