SY908 Square Mirrored Clock: 50 x 50cm, and where it fits

SY908 Square Mirrored Clock: 50 x 50cm, and where it fits — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

SY908

View the product

The SY908 is the square one. The listing offers this clock in two shapes at the same face dimension, so the decision is shape rather than scale: 50 x 50cm for the square SY908, ∅50cm for the round SY907. Both set a mirrored dial inside a teardrop crystal framework. The photographs and the full listing are on the SY908 square mirrored clock page.

Those two numbers are everything the listing gives for the square, and it does not say whether 50 x 50cm is the mirrored dial on its own or the whole piece including the crystal framework. In a tight alcove that difference decides whether it fits, so ask us to confirm which measurement it is before you order.

What a 50cm square asks of the wall

A square reads bigger than a circle of the same width, because it fills the corners a round dial leaves empty. Plan from 50cm as a minimum, not as a target.

  • Over furniture. A 50cm clock sits well above a sideboard or console of roughly 90cm and up. On anything narrower it starts to look as though the furniture is propping it up.
  • Clear wall. Leave 15cm or so of empty wall on each side. Square edges need somewhere to stop, and a mirrored edge running into a door frame reads as a mistake.
  • Height. If it hangs over a piece of furniture, centre the dial roughly 20 to 25cm above the top surface, which puts it a little above eye level for anyone standing.
  • What faces it. A mirrored dial shows you the opposite wall. Sit where you normally sit and look at what the clock would reflect. A window is flattering. A cluttered shelf is not.

Square or round

Same pairing, same 50cm, different jobs. The square suits a wall that already has straight lines on it, panelling, a rectangular mirror, a boxy media unit, and it lines up with the edges of whatever sits beneath. The round SY907 is the one to pick if the room is full of corners and you want something to break them, or if the wall space is awkward and a circle's smaller footprint helps. If you want wide and low rather than square, the SY910 is listed at 110 x 30cm and spans a sideboard in a way a 50cm piece cannot. For a shelf or a desk instead of a wall, the mirrored Table Clock is listed at 36.5 x 7.5 x 25cm. The rest of the range sits in Clocks.

What the listing does not tell you

None of the following is stated, and all of it is worth knowing first: the movement type and battery size, whether the second hand ticks or sweeps quietly, the weight, and the fixing on the back, so we cannot say from the listing alone whether it hangs on a single hook or wants two points. The materials are described as mirrored and crystal without being specified any further. If you need to know exactly what the dial surface and the teardrops are made from, ask us and we will check with the supplier rather than put a guess in writing.

Before you order

  • Mark 50 x 50cm on the wall in masking tape and live with it for an evening.
  • Measure the furniture below. Under about 90cm wide, consider the round instead.
  • Check what the dial will reflect from where you actually sit.
  • Ask us about the movement, the fixing and the current lead time in one message.

Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. Once the wall is marked up, order the SY908 square mirrored clock, or send us a photograph of the wall and we will tell you whether the square or the round is the better fit.
