SY907: a 50cm mirrored clock with a teardrop crystal border

SY907: a 50cm mirrored clock with a teardrop crystal border — Langham Furniture journal

The SY907 is a round mirrored clock listed at 50cm diameter, with the face set inside a border of teardrop crystals. It is the only clock in the clocks range described with cut crystals rather than a mirrored or crushed diamond edge.

The two shapes in the listing

CodeShapeSize as listed
SY907Round50cm diameter
SY908Square50 x 50cm

Same scale, different outline. The round SY907 is the easier shape to slot into a space with awkward edges, while the square SY908 lines up with panelling, shelving and frames. Note that a 50cm square reaches about 71cm corner to corner, so in a measured space that is the figure to check.

A faceted border only works with the right light

The listing describes precision-cut teardrop crystals forming an ornamental border that catches and disperses light. That is a real effect, and it depends entirely on how the wall is lit. Cut facets need a small, bright source to split the light. A table lamp on the furniture below, a directional spotlight or daylight arriving across the wall will all set the border going. A single ceiling fitting directly in front of it, or an evenly lit wall with no point source, will leave the border looking flat.

The face itself is a mirror, so it shows whatever is opposite. Stand where you will read the clock from and look at the reflection before you choose the wall. Facing a bright window, a mirrored dial can be hard to read at certain hours.

Sizing the wall for 50cm

  • Cut a 50cm circle of newspaper and tape it up at the height you intend. Judge it from your usual seat, not from arm's length.
  • Over a sideboard, a chest or a media unit, a 50cm dial generally looks settled above something roughly 80cm to 110cm wide.
  • Allow margin for the crystals. An ornamental border draws the eye outwards, so the piece occupies more wall than the bare 50cm implies.
  • Keep it off a busy walkway. The listing does not state how far the frame stands off the wall, and a crystal border is not something you want catching a sleeve.

What to ask us before you order

  • The type of movement, and whether it is battery powered. Neither is stated.
  • Neither is the weight, nor whether a hanging fixing is supplied. Ask first, then buy hardware suited to your wall.
  • The material of the crystals and what they are mounted on are not stated. If that matters to you, ask.
  • How to clean a faceted border. Nothing in the listing covers it, and a cut edge will collect dust more readily than a flat one, so it is worth asking rather than improvising with a spray.

How it compares with the rest

At the same diameter, the SY905 has a crushed diamond border and the SY903 Wall Clock uses a staggered mirrored frame, so the three are a choice between three ways of edging the same size of face. Compare the photographs side by side, because that decision is entirely visual. All of them sit alongside the mirrored pieces in mirrors and accessories.
