SY902: hanging a 40cm round mirrored clock in a small space
This guide is about
SY902
The SY902 is a round mirrored clock listed at 40cm diameter, with a reflective face and a crushed diamond border. It is the smallest round clock of four related pieces in the clocks range, and the one that suits a wall where something larger would feel heavy.
The four related sizes
| Code | Shape | Size as listed |
|---|---|---|
| SY901 | Square | 40 x 40cm |
| SY902 | Round | 40cm diameter |
| SY905 | Round | 50cm diameter |
| SY906 | Square | 50 x 50cm |
What a circle does that a square does not
A 40cm circle takes up less wall than a 40cm square in every direction except straight across the middle, so it is the easier shape to slot between a light switch and a door architrave. It also behaves differently in a room: where a space is already full of rectangles, shelving, panelling, picture frames, a doorway, a circle is the thing that breaks the grid. The reverse is also true. In a room with curved furniture and round mirrors, the square SY901 is the one that adds contrast.
Where 40cm round works
- A hallway or landing, read in passing from a couple of metres away rather than across a room.
- Above a bedside table, or as a pair above two of them, where the clock answers the furniture below rather than the whole wall.
- In a gallery arrangement of mirrors and frames, as the round element among straight edges.
- On a short wall or a narrow chimney breast where 50cm would leave too little margin either side.
Before you drill, cut a 40cm circle from newspaper and tape it in place. Then stand where you will usually read it from, which is nearly always further back than where you were standing when you held it up.
Light, reflection and sparkle
The listing describes a mirrored face that catches light through the day and a crushed diamond border that adds depth. Both want directional light. A lamp to one side, a spotlight or daylight arriving across the wall will pick out the border; flat light straight onto the face will not. Because the face is a mirror, it also shows whatever sits opposite, so check that reflection before you settle on a wall. Directly facing a window, a mirrored dial can wash out when the sun is behind it.
What the listing leaves out
- The type of movement, and whether it is battery powered.
- The weight and whether a fixing is supplied. Ask us, and match the fixing to your wall type.
- The material of the crushed diamond border, which the listing describes by appearance only.
- Whether the face is glazed, and how the hours are marked. The listing says nothing about either, so go by the photographs.
If you want more presence
The SY905 is the same round design at 50cm, which is the better choice over a sideboard or a fireplace. The SY907 is also 50cm round but framed in teardrop crystals rather than a crushed diamond border, so it is worth comparing the two photographs if the sparkle is the reason you are looking. Everything in this family sits with the mirrored pieces in mirrors and accessories.
