SY1705 Wall Mirror: a slim border, and three sizes to place it

SY1705 Wall Mirror: a slim border, and three sizes to place it — Langham Furniture journal

There is a decision hiding behind every mirror purchase: how much of the piece should be frame. The SY1705 Wall Mirror answers it one way. Its decoration is a diamond pattern set in thin strips around the edge, and the listing's point is that the reflective surface rather than the frame takes centre stage. It calls the detailing delicate and subtle, so expect it to read quietly rather than from across the room.

Start with the 40 x 120cm

Of the three listed sizes this is the one worth knowing about, because the narrow proportion solves a problem the other two cannot. Halls, landings and the wall beside a stair are often 50 or 60cm of usable width between a door frame and a corner. Nothing close to square will sit there. A face 40cm across will, and the 120cm length gives back the height a cramped space needs.

The listing gives each size as two figures without saying which is width and which is height, so on this size in particular, confirm the orientation with us. Hung the other way round it becomes a long low mirror, which is a different piece of furniture entirely.

The three sizes, and what each asks of the wall

Listed sizeWhat to check
40 x 120cmA clear run of wall taller than the long side, with a little plain wall each side of the face.
60 x 90cmFurniture below it of around 90cm or wider. The common size above a console or a basin.
80 x 120cmFurniture of about 120cm or wider, and a wall where the mirror is meant to be the focus.

Whichever you pick, measure the gap your mirror has to pass through on the way in as well as the wall it ends up on. A 120cm panel turns a tight stair dog-leg badly, and glass is the one thing you cannot flex around a corner.

Where this differs from the rest of the range

Within the Wall Mirrors range the SY1705 is the restrained option. The SY1704 Wall Mirror carries a continuous crushed diamond band and a fourth size, 70 x 100cm, so it is the one to look at if you want the sparkle to read from across the room or if your wall falls between these figures. The SY1719 Wall Mirror goes the other way: one size, 80 x 120cm, with a staggered border that is meant to be noticed. For a plain frame instead of a mirrored edge, the SY1710 Wall Mirror is listed with an aluminium one.

Four things the listing does not tell you

  • Border width. The strips are described as thin and delicate, but no measurement is given, so the glass area inside the overall size is not stated.
  • Weight and fixings. Neither is recorded. Ask us what is on the back and what the wall needs, especially on plasterboard.
  • Bathroom use. The description mentions bathrooms among the rooms it suits, but there is no rating for steam or moisture on the page. Worth a question before it goes near a shower.
  • What the diamond detail is made of. Not stated. The two photographs on the product page are the best evidence until you ask.

None of those are reasons not to buy it. They are the questions to put to us first, so that what arrives is what you pictured.
