SY1704 Wall Mirror: which of its four sizes fits your wall

SY1704 Wall Mirror: which of its four sizes fits your wall — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

SY1704 Wall Mirror

View the product

Most wall mirrors are chosen on looks and then hung in the wrong place. The SY1704 Wall Mirror gives you more room to get it right than most mirrors do, because it is listed in four sizes rather than one, and one of those is a narrow 40 x 120cm format for a wall that nothing close to square will suit. The rest of the Wall Mirrors range is worth comparing against it on size alone.

The four listed sizes

Listed sizeWhere it tends to suit
60 x 90cmThe usual choice above a console table or a basin. Enough glass to be useful, small enough to leave plain wall around it.
70 x 100cmA step up for a wider hall wall, or above a chest of drawers.
80 x 120cmThe large option, and the one that becomes the main thing on the wall.
40 x 120cmThe slim one. For a narrow pier of wall between two doors, beside a stair, or a hall too tight for anything close to square.

Each size is given as two figures with no note of which is the width and which is the height. On the 40 x 120 and the 80 x 120 that is the difference between a tall mirror and a long low one, so confirm the orientation with us before you order rather than assuming.

Measuring the wall, not the mirror

Three figures decide this and none of them are on the product page, because they are yours.

  • Clear wall width. Measure between whatever bounds the space: a door architrave, a light switch, the end of a radiator. Leave a margin of plain wall on each side, or the mirror looks wedged in.
  • The furniture underneath. Above a console, sideboard or dressing table, keep the mirror narrower than the furniture. Around two thirds of the furniture width is the usual target, so a 90cm console takes the 60cm face and a 120cm one suits the 80cm.
  • Height off the floor. If the mirror is for looking into, centre the glass around 155 to 160cm up. Above furniture, leave a hand's width between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two read as a pair.

What the border is, and what the listing does not record

The description gives this mirror one piece of decoration: a thin crushed diamond border around a plain mirrored field. What it does not give is the width of that border, the depth of the frame, or what the crushed diamond effect is made from. So the sizes above are the overall measurements, and how much of that is reflective glass is not broken out anywhere on the page. The two photographs on the product listing show the border closer than any description can, and if the exact band width matters to you, ask us for it.

Fixings, weight and steam

Three more blanks, each worth a question before you commit:

  • No weight is recorded. That matters on a stud partition or above a bed, so ask.
  • No fixing method is described. Ask what is on the back of the mirror and whether anything is supplied with it; a piece this size on plasterboard wants proper anchors or a fixing into a stud.
  • Nothing in the listing rates this mirror for a bathroom. Steam is what ruins mirrors over time, so check with us before hanging one opposite a shower.

Ordering the SY1704

Pick your size on the SY1704 Wall Mirror page. If you want the same crushed diamond detail with light built into it, the SY1760 (LED) Wall Mirror is the heart-shaped version with concealed LEDs; the SY1705 Wall Mirror is the quieter relative, a diamond pattern in thin strips rather than a continuous band, in three sizes; and the SY1710 Wall Mirror swaps the mirrored border for a frame the listing describes as aluminium.
