SG03 Clock: a 68cm gold dial, and how to plan for its size

SG03 Clock: a 68cm gold dial, and how to plan for its size — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

SG03 Clock

View the product

The SG03 Clock is listed at 68cm diameter with a gold finish, which makes it the middle of the three gold clocks in the clocks range and a good deal larger than most clocks people picture when they start looking. Nearly 70cm across is a piece of wall furniture, not an accessory, and that is the first thing to settle.

Where the 68cm sits in the range

ClockDiameter as listedHow the listing describes it
SG02 Clock60cmGold frame, sunburst effect dial
SG03 Clock68cmGold decorative clock
SG04 Clock70cmGold frame, sunburst effect dial

The SG02 and SG04 are both described with a sunburst dial; the SG03's listing does not use that wording, so take the photographs on the product page as the guide to what the dial actually looks like rather than assuming it matches its neighbours.

Mantelpiece, shelf or wall

The listing suggests a mantelpiece, a desk or a shelf; it does not mention hanging it on a wall at all. At 68cm diameter that is worth confirming rather than assuming: a clock that size leaning on a mantel needs real depth on the shelf and something to stop it sliding, and the listing does not state whether a stand, a foot or a hanging fixing is supplied. Ask us which it comes with before you plan the spot. If you do intend it for a mantel, measure the shelf depth and the height to the ceiling or to the bottom of anything above it first.

Sizing the wall

  • Cut a 68cm circle from newspaper and tape it up at the height you have in mind. It is the only reliable way to judge a diameter this big.
  • Over furniture, a clock around half to two-thirds the width of the piece below usually looks settled. At 68cm that suggests something roughly 100cm to 140cm wide beneath it.
  • On a chimney breast, measure the breast itself rather than the whole wall. A 68cm dial on a 90cm breast leaves very little margin either side.
  • Keep it clear of a door swing and of anything at head height on a landing. The listing does not state how far the frame projects.

What the listing leaves open

  • The type of movement, and whether it is battery powered.
  • The weight and the fixing method, which matters more at this diameter than at any other. Ask us, then choose hardware for your wall type.
  • The material under the gold finish. The listing calls the finish polished but does not say what it is applied to, so if the clock has to live alongside existing gold-toned fittings, ask for a close photograph.
  • Whether the dial is glazed.

Other clocks worth a look

If 68cm turns out to be more than the wall can take, the SG02 Clock covers the same idea at 60cm. For a mirrored face rather than a metal one, the SY903 Wall Clock is a 50cm round dial in a staggered mirrored frame, and there is a family of crushed diamond clocks in the wider mirrors and accessories range.
