SG02 Clock: a 60cm gold sunburst and where it hangs well

SG02 Clock: a 60cm gold sunburst and where it hangs well — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

SG02 Clock

View the product

The SG02 Clock is listed at 60cm diameter, in a gold frame with a sunburst effect dial. That diameter puts it at the smaller end of the three gold clocks in the clocks range, and the difference between them is worth a minute of your time, because on a wall 10cm of diameter is far more visible than it sounds.

The three gold clocks, by diameter

ClockDiameter as listed
SG02 Clock60cm
SG03 Clock68cm
SG04 Clock70cm

All three are described with a gold finish; the SG02 and the SG04 are both described with a sunburst effect, while the SG03 is described simply as a gold decorative clock. The listings do not state the metal or the coating behind the gold finish, so if the exact tone matters next to existing brassware, ask us for a closer photograph before you order.

How much wall a 60cm clock wants

A round clock looks undersized when it is hung on a wall far wider than itself, and crowded when it nearly fills it. A rough working method:

  • Over a sofa or a sideboard, aim for a clock roughly half to two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. At 60cm, the SG02 sits comfortably over a piece somewhere around 90cm to 120cm wide.
  • Leave a clear gap between the bottom of the frame and the top of the furniture, so the two read as a group rather than a collision. Measure that gap on the wall with tape first.
  • Cut a 60cm circle of newspaper and stick it up. With a sunburst dial the rays carry the eye outwards, so the piece occupies more visual space than its diameter suggests.
  • In a hallway or on a landing, measure the walkway too. The listing does not state how far the frame stands off the wall.

Light, and why the sunburst matters

The listing describes rays that catch the light from the centre outwards. In practice that means raking light does the work: a clock on a wall at an angle to a window or a lamp will show the rays as a pattern of highlights and shadow, while flat light straight onto the face will flatten the effect. If the wall you have in mind is lit head-on by a ceiling fitting, consider a nearby lamp or a wall light to give the dial something to catch.

What to confirm before ordering

  • The type of movement, and whether it is battery powered. Neither is stated.
  • The weight and the fixing method are not stated. Ask us, then match the fixing to your wall: plasterboard, lath and plaster, and masonry all want different hardware.
  • Whether the dial is glazed, and how the hours are marked. Look closely at the photographs on the product page, and ask us if they do not settle it.

If a different look suits the room

Gold is not the only direction in the range. The SY907 is a 50cm round mirrored face framed in teardrop crystals, and the SY905 is a 50cm round mirrored face with a crushed diamond border, both sitting in the wider mirrors and accessories range if you want the clock to echo a mirror rather than metalwork.
