Sandhurst Upholstered Bed: A Channelled Frame in Five Sizes
This guide is about
Sandhurst Upholstered Bed
The Sandhurst is the plainest bed in our own range to describe and the hardest to photograph. Everything about it is in one detail: diagonal channels running corner to corner across the headboard, repeated along the side rail so the geometry turns the corner with the bed. There is no storage in the base, which is what lets the frame sit low and the headboard do all the talking. The Sandhurst upholstered bed page has it from several angles, which is the only way to read channelling properly.
Built as a frame
This is a bed frame, not a divan. The mattress sits down inside an upholstered surround, with the side rails and foot end finished in the same cloth as the headboard, so there is no visible change of material anywhere on the bed. The practical difference from a divan is the profile: a frame keeps the mattress lower and shows a shaped side, where a divan base is a square box you dress with a valance.
It also means the bed is handmade to your order as one item rather than assembled from a base and a board chosen separately. If you have ever bought a headboard to go with a base and then lived with two slightly different creams, you will know why that matters.
Five sizes, two lengths
These are the outside measurements of the finished bed at its widest point:
- Single 3FT - 109 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Small Double 4FT - 139 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Double 4FT6 - 155 cm wide by 212 cm long
- King 5FT - 170 cm wide by 222 cm long
- Super King 6FT - 200 cm wide by 222 cm long
Note the jump in length between the double and the king: 212 cm becomes 222 cm. People allow for the extra width when they move up to a king and forget the extra ten centimetres at the foot, which is exactly where a radiator or a chest of drawers tends to be. Measure the length of the room as carefully as the width before you decide.
The surround also adds width over the mattress, which is why a bed sold as a 4FT6 double measures 155 cm across the finished piece. Work from the figures above when you plan, never from the size name. The size guide on the product page draws every size from the side and from above to one scale so you can see how much room the frame itself takes.
Twenty colourways
The Sandhurst is upholstered to order in any of 20 colourways, and every cloth-covered part takes the fabric you choose. The weaves behave differently under the channelling: a plush velvet in Steel, Mocca or Mink throws a strong line where each channel turns, while Silver Linoso and the chenilles give a softer, more even surface. Coniston in Almond, Charcoal or Emerald sits between the two. If the room has one strong colour already, the quieter weaves are usually the safer choice; if the bed is meant to be the thing you notice, velvet is doing you a favour.
Practical points
The bed is specified with a tall headboard. Mattresses are sold separately, so you can pair the frame with the tension you actually sleep well on rather than the one that happened to be bundled. Anything the listing does not state, including fabric composition and how the frame comes into the room, is worth asking us about directly.
Where we deliver
Our shop is in Glasgow, and delivery is free within 50 miles of it, with a flat £50 charge beyond that radius. If you are shopping for beds in Scotland and you are outside the 50 mile radius, that £50 is the figure, flat, however far past the line you are.
The Sandhurst is one of several headboard styles in the same construction, so it is worth seeing it beside the rest of the upholstered beds before you settle. When you have a size and a colourway in mind, the Sandhurst can be configured here.
