Sandhurst Kids Upholstered Ottoman Bed: Every Toy Under the Mattress
This guide is about
Sandhurst Kids Upholstered Ottoman Bed
A child's bedroom runs out of floor before it runs out of things to put on it. The Sandhurst answers that by making the whole area under the mattress into one compartment: lift the platform and you have the entire footprint of the bed, lined, with nothing dividing it. There are no drawers and no runners, so nothing has to clear a wall or a wardrobe door to open. You can see how the lift works on the Sandhurst kids upholstered ottoman bed page.
How the lift behaves
Gas struts take the weight of the mattress platform, which is the part that matters when a child is the one opening it. Because the Sandhurst is a frame rather than a divan box, the sides are upholstered and shaped, so when the bed is closed the storage is hidden completely. It reads as a bed, not as a bed with a box under it.
Ottoman beds suit a child's room better than drawers for a plain geometric reason: a drawer needs clear floor in front of it, and a child's floor is never clear. A lid that opens upwards needs clear air instead.
The headboard, and why it carries on
The Sandhurst headboard is diagonal channels running corner to corner, and the detail is repeated along the side rail. The headboard, base and sides are all upholstered in the same cloth, so the bed arrives as one piece rather than a frame and a board that nearly match. For a bed that will be looked at from the doorway more than it is looked at from the pillow, the side rail carrying the pattern is the part that earns its keep.
Three sizes
Measured across the finished bed at its widest point:
- Single 3FT - 109 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Small Double 4FT - 139 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Double 4FT6 - 155 cm wide by 212 cm long
All three are the same length, so the only variable is width. With an ottoman there is a second measurement nobody thinks of until the bed is in the room: the height the platform needs to swing through. Check what is on the wall above the bed, a window ledge, a radiator shelf, a row of pictures, and check it on the side the lid opens from. The full size guide on the product page draws the bed from the side and from above with every size to one scale, which makes that easier to picture than a list of numbers does.
Twenty-six colourways to choose from
The bed is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, and everything finished in cloth takes the one you pick. Blue Coniston, Pink Coniston and Emerald Coniston cover the brighter end; Silver Chenille, Almond Coniston and Mink Naples are the ones parents tend to land on when the room is going to be repainted in a few years. Plush velvets in Mocca, Steel and Black sit somewhere in between, and they catch the channelling more sharply than a flat weave does.
Before you order
Mattresses are sold separately, so the tension and depth are yours to choose rather than inherited from the frame. The bed is specified with a tall headboard. If there is something the listing does not answer, how much the platform weighs to lift, or what the lining is, ask us. We would rather give you the real answer now than have you discover it when the bed arrives.
Delivery from our Glasgow store
Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store, and £50 beyond it, whether the bed is going five minutes away or several hours north. That is the whole of the charge: there is no sliding scale.
If you are comparing ottoman beds across the range, the adult version of this frame and the divan-based lift-up bases are worth looking at side by side, because they store differently even though they open the same way. The rest of the kids upholstered ottoman beds are listed together, and the Sandhurst itself is configured here by size and fabric.
