Channels, wings and a fluted rail: the Rushmere Upholstered Bed
This guide is about
Rushmere Upholstered Bed
The Rushmere Upholstered Bed is the frame version of a design that runs through four beds in our range, and it is the one to choose when you want the look and have somewhere else to keep the bedding. There is no storage in the base, so the bed sits low and the headboard carries the whole thing.
The design, line by line
Three elements do the work. Broad vertical channels across the centre of the headboard, which give it length and height without buttoning. Two gently forward wings at the sides, which turn a flat board into something with depth and make the bed read as furniture. And a fluted side rail, so the vertical rhythm of the headboard continues down the length of the bed. That last detail is the one people notice last and value most, because the side of the bed is the view from the bedroom door.
Everything finished in cloth is done in the same fabric: headboard, wings, surround and rails. No matching a board to a base, and no near-miss between two dye lots.
Frame construction, and what it means in practice
The mattress sits down inside an upholstered surround, with the side rails and foot end finished in the same cloth as the headboard. Nothing lifts and nothing pulls out. Two consequences follow. The bed keeps a low, continuous line, which suits rooms with a lot of light and rooms where you would rather the bed did not dominate. And the mattress edge is hidden by the surround, so the bed looks made even when it is not quite.
The cost is the space underneath, which on a frame is simply floor. If you need it, the same design exists as an ottoman with a platform that lifts, and that is the comparison to make rather than trying to work around a frame.
Sizes, and the divan comparison
- Single 3FT: 104 cm wide by 208 cm long
- Small Double 4FT: 127 cm wide by 208 cm long
- Double 4FT6: 149 cm wide by 212 cm long
- King 5FT: 164 cm wide by 219 cm long
- Super King 6FT: 194 cm wide by 219 cm long
Those are finished dimensions at the widest point, and they include the upholstered surround. This is the figure that catches people out when they move up from a divan: a King divan base sits close to the mattress width, while a King Rushmere is 164 cm across. Measure the room, not the mattress, and check the route in as well as the space it lands in. A size guide on the product page draws the bed from the side and from above with every size at one scale.
26 colourways, and how to narrow them down
Upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways: eight plush velvets, seven Coniston shades, six Naples, four chenilles and a silver Linoso. A tall headboard is included.
On a channelled headboard the cloth decides how strong the design looks. Plush velvet throws light along each channel, which exaggerates the vertical rhythm and makes the wings read deep. Coniston and Naples are flatter, so the channels become a quiet texture and the bed turns tailored rather than theatrical. Chenille sits between the two. Order samples, put them against the wall the bed will stand on, and look at them at night as well as in daylight.
What to look at alongside it
The Rushmere is part of our upholstered beds, and if the bedding has to live somewhere the upholstered ottoman beds are the next click. Customers also compare it against divan beds, which win on floor space and lose on outline. If you are looking at beds in Glasgow, the quickest way to settle it is to stand next to both, and the showroom is the place to do that.
Made to order, and delivery
Each Rushmere is made to order in your size and cloth. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it. Mattresses are sold separately so you can pick the tension yourself rather than take a bundled one. The sizes, the cloths and the size guide are all on the Rushmere product page.
