Roma PU Chair: ring knocker or lion, and how to choose

Roma PU Chair: ring knocker or lion, and how to choose — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Roma PU Chair (Ring Knocker/Chrome Legs)

View the product

There are two coated Roma chairs on sale and the only published difference between them is the fitting on the back. The Roma PU Chair (Ring Knocker/Chrome Legs) is listed at 64 x 56 x 97cm with a polyurethane covering, hexagonal stitching across the backrest, chrome legs and a ring knocker. Its lion-knocker twin carries the same figures. Here is how to choose between them, and what to settle with the shop before either arrives.

The figures, exactly as listed

Read those as width, depth and overall height. The listing does not label them and gives no seat height, which is the measurement that decides whether the chair slides under your own table. Ask for it before ordering six.

Ring or lion

Both sit in the same place on the back of the chair, and the choice is mostly about how much the back is seen and how plain you want it.

  • The ring is the quieter of the two. It reads as a circle of hardware rather than an animal figure, which suits a room where the chairs are not meant to be the subject.
  • The listing calls the ring detail functional as well as decorative. It does not say it is a handle, so if you were planning to pull chairs out by it, ask the shop whether it is designed to take that.
  • The lion version is the Roma PU Chair (Lion Knocker/Chrome Legs), identical in size and covering.
  • Neither is the Roma Chair (No Knocker/Chrome Legs), which keeps the hexagonal stitching but carries no fitting, and is easier to wipe round.

If the chairs live against a wall, most of that detail faces the plaster. It is worth thinking about where the table actually stands before paying for a feature on the back.

The coated covering, and what is missing from the page

The listing describes the covering as polyurethane chosen for easy maintenance, with the stitching adding both pattern and support. That makes it the version to consider for a table in daily use. What the page does not give is a cleaning code, a coating thickness, a fibre content for the backing or any wear rating, so ask for care instructions in writing rather than assuming anything about how it should be cleaned. Light grey is the finish that will show that answer soonest.

How many fit, and the clearance behind

Length of table edgeChairs at 64cmClear floor wanted behind
1.2m1About 56cm to stand up
1.6m2About 56cm to stand up
1.8m2, comfortablyNearer a metre if anyone walks past
2.4m3Nearer a metre if anyone walks past
3.0m4Nearer a metre if anyone walks past

At 97cm the back stands above most table tops, so measure what is fixed to the wall at that height as well as the floor in front of it. A dado rail, a radiator or a low sill will all meet the top of the back when a chair is pushed away from the table.

What the listing does not state

  • Seat height, seat width and seat depth.
  • Frame material and filling.
  • Any cleaning code or wear rating.
  • Any weight limit.
  • Whether the ring is intended to be used as a handle.
  • Whether the chair arrives built, and whether it is supplied singly or in pairs.

What it sits with

For the same coated covering in a lower, simpler shape, look at the Marbella PU Chair (Black Legs). The whole range, knockers and leg finishes side by side, is on the Dining Chairs page, with tops at Dining Tables. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.

Decide ring or lion, count the places at 64cm, then choose a finish on the Roma PU Chair (Ring Knocker/Chrome Legs) page.
