Small pieces are the ones people buy without measuring, and then find do not work. The Roma Mirrored Stool is listed at 41 x 33 x 42cm and nothing more, so here is what that set of figures tells you. They are unlabelled, so everything below reads them as a 41 x 33cm seat standing 42cm off the floor; ask us to confirm the seat height before you buy it for a particular table.

A 42cm seat height, and what it suits

Dining and desk chairs are usually built around 45cm to 47cm at the seat. At 42cm this is a shade lower, which puts it in the same band as a sofa cushion. That makes it a natural piece for perching at the end of a bed, pulling up beside an armchair, or sitting on briefly to put shoes on near a door.

What 42cm does not give you is working height at a table. If you are buying it to sit and write, eat or type, measure the underside of your table and expect to be reaching upwards. Taller seats exist for that job and we would rather point you at one.

The footprint, and the part nobody measures

A seat of 41 x 33cm is narrow, which is exactly the point in a bedroom where a wider stool blocks a wardrobe door or a drawer front. Measure the swing of the nearest door and the pull-out of the nearest drawer, then see whether 33cm of depth clears both. It usually does, and that is the quiet advantage of a small piece.

The part nobody measures is where it lives when it is not being sat on. A stool that has to be lifted out of the way every morning gets resented. At this size it will tuck against a wall or under a taller top, so decide its parking spot now.

Using it with a dressing table

The Roma Dressing Table in the same range is listed at 110 x 45 x 85cm. Put the two figures together: a 42cm seat under an 85cm top is a long way down from the surface, which suits reaching and perching far better than it suits settling in. If you want conventional desk posture at that table, bring both measurements to us and we will talk through it rather than sell you a mismatch.

Questions the listing leaves open

There is no upholstery described, no seat material, no leg or frame detail, no weight limit and no stated colour. A weight limit in particular is not something to guess at, so ask us for it if the stool will be in daily use or used by someone who needs it to be steady. The photographs on the Roma Mirrored Stool page show the construction far better than the one-line description, and we can check the rest for you.

Other small pieces in the range

If you need a surface rather than a seat at a similar scale, the Roma Pedestal 33 and the Roma Nest of Tables cover that, the smallest table in the nest being 31 x 45 x 33cm. The whole line is under Mirrored Furniture. Delivery is free within 50 miles of the Glasgow store and £50 beyond.
