Roma Bedside Table: measure your mattress height before you order

Roma Bedside Table: measure your mattress height before you order — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Roma Bedside Table - 3 Drawers

View the product

The Roma Bedside Table - 3 Drawers is listed at 46 x 37 x 67cm. That measurement and the drawer count in its name are everything the listing records, so this post deals with the one thing people get wrong about a bedside table: the height. A table lower than the top of your mattress is no use to you.

The dimensions are unlabelled. Read as a bedside table they are 46cm wide, 37cm deep and 67cm tall. If the gap beside your bed is tight, ask us to confirm which figure is which.

67cm against your mattress

Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, not to the top of the bed frame. Then compare:

  • Mattress top around 50 to 55cm. Common on a low frame. The table stands above the mattress, so the top is easy to reach from lying down and the lamp sits high enough to read by.
  • Mattress top around 60 to 65cm. Typical of a divan with a deep mattress. The table is roughly level, which works well.
  • Mattress top at 70cm or more. A deep divan with a thick mattress and a topper can reach this. The table then sits below the mattress, and reaching down for a glass of water is awkward. A taller piece such as the Diamond Stand 01 (LED) at 40 x 40 x 80cm is the better match for a bed that high.

46 x 37cm into the gap beside a bed

A bedside table has to fit between the bed and the wall, or the bed and a radiator, and those gaps are rarely generous. Measure at the floor, because a divan base is often wider than it looks and a skirting board eats another couple of centimetres.

At 46cm wide it needs a 50cm gap to sit with a little air either side. The 37cm depth is the forgiving part: it will not stand proud of the bed in most rooms. Allow around 30cm in front for the drawers to pull out.

The top is small. 46 x 37cm takes a lamp, a book and a glass, or a lamp and a phone on charge, but not a lamp and a laptop.

Three drawers, and what the listing omits

Three drawers on a 67cm carcase means shallow drawers rather than deep ones, which suits what actually lives beside a bed: medication, chargers, a notebook, reading glasses. The listing does not say how deep each drawer is, whether they are equal, or whether they run on soft-closing runners. It records no material, no finish, no weight and nothing about assembly. It is filed in Mirrored Furniture, and the five photographs show the finish better than any sentence here. Ask us to confirm anything your decision rests on, particularly if you need a matching pair.

What it works with

For the matching chest across the room, the Roma 4 Drawer Dresser is listed at 90 x 45 x 85cm, and the Roma Dressing Table with Roma Mirrored Stool finishes the room. If you want something smaller and lower, Pedestal 22 is listed at 35 x 35 x 60cm and takes less floor, though its listing mentions no drawers.
