Pedestal 22: where a 35cm square at 60cm tall actually works

Pedestal 22: where a 35cm square at 60cm tall actually works — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Pedestal 22

View the product

Pedestal 22 is listed at 35 x 35 x 60cm. That is all the listing says: no material, no finish, no weight. Small pieces are the ones people buy without measuring and then find are the wrong height, so this post is about where a 35cm square at 60cm tall works.

The numbers are unlabelled, but two of the three are equal, so the base is a 35cm square and the remaining 60cm is the height.

60cm is sofa-arm height, and that is the point

Most sofa arms land somewhere around 55 to 65cm from the floor. A pedestal at 60cm therefore sits level with the arm beside you, which is the height at which you can put a mug down without looking and pick it up without reaching down. A coffee table at about 45cm makes you lean forward; a console at 82cm is above the arm and feels like a shelf.

Other places 60cm does the job well:

  • Beside a bed with a low frame. If the top of your mattress is around 50 to 55cm from the floor, a 60cm pedestal is level with it or just above, which is what you want for a glass of water.
  • In a corner as a plant or lamp stand. 35cm square takes almost no floor, so it fits a corner a side table cannot reach into.
  • Either side of a chair. A matching pair reads as a deliberate arrangement in a way a single table does not.

What a 35cm top will and will not take

Useful, but genuinely small. A 35cm square takes a lamp, a book, a drink and a coaster, or one decent plant pot. It will not take a laptop and a mug together, and a lamp with a base wider than about 25cm will leave nothing beside it. Measuring for it is simple: 35cm of floor plus hand room, so a 40cm gap is comfortable.

What the listing does not say

Material, finish, weight, whether the top is solid or glass, and whether it arrives assembled: none of that is recorded. It is filed in Mirrored Furniture, which is the only indication the data gives of how it looks, so judge the finish from the five photographs and ask us to confirm anything that matters to you. We would rather answer the question than have you guess from a description that was never written.

The rest of the set

There are two more pedestals in the same family to compare footprints with, Roma Pedestal 33 and Roma Pedestal 55, and we can confirm the dimensions of either against this one. If you want the same idea taller, the Diamond Stand 01 (LED) is listed at 40 x 40 x 80cm, which puts a display nearer eye level. In a bedroom, Roma Bedside Table - 3 Drawers is listed at 46 x 37 x 67cm and its name gives you three drawers. This listing mentions no drawer or shelf at all, so ask us what is under the top before you choose.

Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. Measure the height of your sofa arm first, then see the Pedestal 22 page for the photographs and to order.
