Wall Panel 01C Dark Grey: setting out, sockets and light

Wall Panel 01C Dark Grey: setting out, sockets and light — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Wall Panel 01C - Dark Grey - Acoustic - 240cm - (1 pack / 4pcs)

View the product

Wall Panel 01C in dark grey is a felt-backed slat panel the shop supplies: HDF slats, four panels to a pack, each 60 x 240 x 1.5cm, 5.76m² covered. A dark panel is the least forgiving one to set out badly, because every joint and every cut reads against the shadow in the gaps. This post is about getting the layout right first time.

Four panels 0.6m wide and 2.4m tall is 5.76m², so the figures agree. The slat and gap add to a 4cm repeat, which on a 60cm panel is 15 slats across; treat that as arithmetic rather than a stated figure, since the slat at each edge may be formed differently where panels meet.

Where the first panel goes

Decide this before you order, not on the day. Three rules that save a bad-looking wall:

  1. Start where the eye lands. Stand in the doorway. Put your full-width panels at the end you see first and push the made-up narrow panel into the far corner where a lamp or a chair will sit in front of it.
  2. Centre on the feature, not the wall. If a television or a bed sits on the wall, set the panels out so the feature is centred on the panelling rather than on the plaster. A 5cm discrepancy at the skirting is invisible; the same discrepancy behind a headboard is not.
  3. Never finish a wall on a sliver. If your maths leaves a last panel under about 15cm, take a little off the first panel too and split the difference between the two ends.

For pack counts, multiply the wall's greatest width by its greatest height in metres and divide by 5.76. A 3.6m by 2.4m wall is 8.64m², which is two packs with two panels over. Order the whole wall in one purchase, since nothing on the listing promises colour matching between production batches.

Sockets, switches and a TV bracket

Mark every outlet, switch and bracket fixing on the bare wall first, then set your joints so a cut-out does not fall across one. A cut-out in the middle of a panel is tidy; the same cut-out straddling two panels never quite lines up.

The panel is 1.5cm thick, so anything surface-mounted sits that much further forward once the wall is clad and a flush socket is now recessed behind the slats. Deeper back boxes, a socket extension or a spacer may be needed, and that is electrical work rather than panelling. Likewise a wall-mounted television bracket must be fixed to the structure behind, not to the panel, so plan where those fixings pass through.

The listing does not state the fixing method for the panel itself, whether it can be used on a ceiling, or whether a slat can be cut through rather than cut in a gap. The shop supplies adhesive for wall panels, but this product does not name it, so confirm first.

Dark grey, and what light does to it

A dark slatted wall works by shadow. The 1.5cm gaps read as fine dark lines and the room gains depth rather than brightness, which is why it suits a media wall, a bedroom behind a headboard or a hallway with a good light source. In a small, poorly lit room it will make the space feel smaller, and that is a real effect, not a matter of taste.

Light it from above or from one side rather than straight on. A downlight grazing the slats makes the texture; a flat ceiling pendant kills it. The felt colour behind the slats is not stated on the listing and it is visible in every gap, so ask for a sample if you want to know exactly how dark those lines will read. The description mentions sound absorption but gives no measured figure, so ask the shop whether any test data exists if you need the acoustic performance to a specification.

Compare before you order

Other dark greys worth putting beside it: 03C Dark Grey and the broader-slatted 17C Dark Grey wide slat, each with its own slat and gap figures on its own page. If the room cannot take the depth, 01B in light grey is the same panel in the lighter tone. The rest of the range is in Slat & Acoustic Panels.

Once your layout is marked on the wall, the photographs and specification are on the Wall Panel 01C - Dark Grey - Acoustic page, and the shop can confirm the trim, the fixing and the current lead time. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.
