Oslo Chair: boucle, 63cm wide, and the knock-down option

Oslo Chair: boucle, 63cm wide, and the knock-down option — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Oslo Chair

View the product

Two things about the Oslo Chair decide whether it suits your room: it is a broad seat, at a listed 63cm, and it can be had either built or as a knock-down. Both matter before you order, one for how many you can fit and one for how you get them into the room. The listing also gives 56 and 77cm, a boucle covering and three colours. Here is what that adds up to.

The figures, exactly as listed

The sensible reading is 63cm wide, 56cm deep and 77cm to the top of the back, which would make this a low-backed chair that sits at about table height rather than above it. The listing does not label the figures and gives no seat height, so confirm both with the shop if the chair has to slide under an apron or a tight table frame.

63cm wide is the number to plan around

Nine centimetres sounds like nothing until you multiply it. A 54cm chair and a 63cm chair are a different seating plan on the same table.

1.8m2, comfortably3, snug

So the Oslo suits a table you want to seat generously rather than fully. Behind the table, allow roughly the 56cm depth again to push a chair back and stand, and about a metre where someone walks past an occupied seat.

Built or knock-down, and why it matters

A knock-down chair arrives in a flatter carton and is assembled in the room. That is the answer to a tenement stair, a turn at the top of a staircase, a narrow hall or a doorway you already know is the problem in your flat. Measure the narrowest point on the route in and tell the shop which version you want, because this is a choice made at the time of ordering rather than afterwards.

What the listing does not say is what assembling the knock-down version involves: no tools are named, no fixings are described, and there is no note on whether the covering is already fitted to the parts. Ask before you choose it, especially if you are ordering several.

Boucle, and what the listing leaves out

The listing names boucle and nothing further: no fibre content, no cleaning code, no rub test, nothing on whether the cover comes off. Boucle is a looped yarn by definition, and loops are what a cat's claw or a watch strap finds, so it is worth asking what cleaning and what wear the covering will take before you put four of them round a family table.

On colour: off-white is the one that makes the texture read, and the one that will show a dining room's worst habits. Dark green is the quietest against oak and walnut tops. Light grey sits between the two. All three are listed as available, and the page carries the choice.

What the listing does not state

  • Seat height, seat width and seat depth.
  • Frame material and filling.
  • Boucle composition and any care code.
  • Any weight limit.
  • Whether chairs are supplied singly or in pairs.

What it sits with

For the same textured covering in a wider, lower shape, the Siena Tub Chair is the other boucle piece in the range, though its footprint is a different proposition altogether. If the knock-down option is what interests you, the Lucca Cross Back Chair (KD) and the Torino Ladder Back Chair (KD) are two more chairs here offered that way; their pages describe the seat differently for the built and knock-down versions, so read the listing you order from. Compare the lot on the Dining Chairs page, with tops under Dining Tables. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.

Measure your table edge and the route into the room, then pick a colour and a build option on the Oslo Chair page.
