Oakley Upholstered Bed

View the product

If you have been looking at beds in Glasgow and keep coming back to the ones with vertical fluting, the Oakley is the version of that idea done properly. The headboard is narrow vertical channels set inside a plain flat surround, and the side rail is fluted to match, so the detail carries round the bed instead of stopping at the pillows. You can see it in all five sizes on the Oakley upholstered bed page.

What a frame gives you that a divan does not

The Oakley is a bed frame. The mattress sits down inside an upholstered surround, with the side rails and foot end finished in the same cloth as the headboard. There is no storage in the base.

That is a real choice rather than an omission. Dropping the mattress into a surround keeps the whole bed lower, which reads as calmer in a room with a low ceiling and makes the headboard the thing you notice. The upholstered rails also mean the bed is finished on all four sides, so it works in the middle of a room or under a window, where a divan box with a plain foot end can look like it is facing the wrong way. If you need the space under the bed instead, our upholstered ottoman beds put the same kind of headboard over a lifting base.

The five sizes, as finished beds

The surround adds material around the mattress, so these numbers are larger than the mattress size. They are the measurements that matter for fitting the bed into a room:

  • Single 3FT: 99 cm wide by 212 cm long
  • Small Double 4FT: 127 cm wide by 212 cm long
  • Double 4FT6: 144 cm wide by 212 cm long
  • King 5FT: 159 cm wide by 222 cm long
  • Super King 6FT: 189 cm wide by 222 cm long

Note the jump in length between the double and the king: 212 cm up to 222 cm. People plan for the extra width and then find the bed ten centimetres further into the room than they expected. The product page has the full size guide with the bed drawn from the side and from above, every size to the same scale.

Three measurements before you order

Width against your floor, with at least enough room to pass on the side you get out of. Length against the wall, using the figures above rather than the mattress size. And the route in, because the headboard is a single upholstered panel and will not flex round a tight turn on a stair. If your hallway or landing is awkward, send us the narrowest dimension and we will tell you whether it goes.

Twenty-five colourways on every cloth surface

The Oakley is upholstered to order in any of twenty-five colourways, and every part finished in cloth, meaning the headboard, the base and the sides, is done in the fabric you choose. The range spans plush velvets, chenilles, the Coniston and Naples weaves and a Silver Linoso, with colours from Cream and Almond through Mink, Mocca and Armour to Emerald, Blue, Pink, Slate Grey, Charcoal and Black.

Fluting and fabric interact more than people expect. In a plush velvet the channels read as light and shadow and the bed becomes the focal point of the room. In a flatter weave such as Coniston the same channels are structural rather than showy, and the bed sits back. If you are torn, ask us for fabric samples and stand them against your wall colour in daylight; a screen cannot tell you how a pile catches the light.

Headboard and mattress

The Oakley comes with its tall headboard included rather than as an extra, which is worth knowing when you are comparing it with beds where the board is priced separately. Mattresses are sold separately, so you choose the tension rather than inheriting one.

Delivery

Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it. From the showroom that radius covers Glasgow and a good deal of the surrounding area, and anywhere further is the flat charge.

The full specification, the fabric list and the size drawings are on the Oakley's own page. If the fluting is the part you like but you want to see the alternatives, the upholstered beds range has the other headboard styles built the same way, so you can compare boards without changing anything else about the bed.
