Netherton Upholstered Ottoman Bed: Bold Headboard, Hidden Storage
This guide is about
Netherton Upholstered Ottoman Bed
Ottoman beds come in two shapes, and the difference is not the amount of storage. One is a divan box with a lifting lid. The other is an upholstered frame with a lifting platform inside it, so the shaped sides stay where they are and nothing about the bed says it opens. The Netherton upholstered ottoman bed is the second kind, and it carries the boldest headboard in the range: large panels set in a chevron above a grid of squares.
Frame ottoman or divan ottoman
Both open the full footprint of the bed, so the choice is about everything else. On a divan base the lid is the whole top of the box, which means a visible seam and flat side panels, and that is how most divan beds with lifting storage are built. They do measure tighter for the same mattress, which matters in a room where the wall is the constraint.
On the Netherton the platform lifts on gas struts inside an upholstered surround. The sides are upholstered and shaped, the storage is hidden entirely when the bed is closed, and the bed still looks like a frame. You pay for that in width, because the surround sits outside the mattress rather than under it. It is worth comparing the two directly: ottoman divan beds on one side, upholstered ottoman beds on the other.
The headboard
Large panels in a chevron above a grid of squares, a bolder geometry than anything else in the range, upholstered in the same cloth as the base and the sides. With every bit of space below the mattress given over to storage, the headboard is doing all of the decorating, and this one has enough in it to carry a plain room on its own.
What goes underneath
One lined compartment covering the whole area beneath the platform, with no drawers and no dividing rail, and gas struts carrying the weight of the mattress as it rises. The listing does not state an internal depth, so if you are buying the bed around something particular you need it to hold, ask us with the size in mind and we will check rather than estimate.
It is worth looking up as well as down. The platform swings above the bed when it opens, so anything fixed to the wall at the head end wants checking first, and a sloping ceiling over the bed deserves a second thought before you choose a side of the room.
Five sizes
- Single 3FT: 109 cm wide by 212 cm long
- Small Double 4FT: 139 cm by 212 cm
- Double 4FT6: 155 cm by 212 cm
- King 5FT: 170 cm by 222 cm
- Super King 6FT: 200 cm by 222 cm
Finished bed, widest point, not mattress size. The three smaller sizes are 212 cm long and the king and super king 222 cm. The size guide on the product page draws every one of them from the side and from above at the same scale, which is a faster way to picture it than holding five pairs of numbers in your head.
Picking the cloth
Upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, with headboard, base and sides all finished in the cloth you choose. Because the board has two patterns in it, pile decides whether they separate or merge. A mid-tone velvet such as Mink Plush Velvet, or a chenille such as Silver Chenille, lifts each facet and keeps the chevron distinct from the squares. A pale flat weave such as Almond Coniston reads as one textured panel. Both are defensible, and samples settle it faster than a screen will.
Before you order
Three things worth settling. The size, measured against the wall and then 212 cm or 222 cm out from it. The cloth, which is easier to judge with a sample in the room. And the mattress, sold separately so tension is a decision of its own; our mattresses are listed on their own pages.
Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it. Everything configurable sits on the Netherton ottoman product page.
