Montrose Ottoman Divan Bed: a Grid of Buttoned Cushions

Montrose Ottoman Divan Bed: a Grid of Buttoned Cushions — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Montrose Ottoman Divan Bed

View the product

The Montrose headboard is a grid of generous square cushions, each carrying a single fabric-covered button at its centre. Buttoned rather than crystal, square rather than diamond: it is a quieter board than the tufted ones in the range, and for most people it is the reason to choose the Montrose ottoman divan bed over its siblings. Underneath, the whole base lifts.

Square cushions, one button each

A fabric-covered button pulls the centre of each square in slightly, so the cushion domes around it. Because the button is covered in the same cloth as everything else, the pattern is all shape and shadow with nothing shiny in it. That suits a bedroom where the bed is not meant to be the loudest thing in the room, and it suits a headboard you lean back against, since there is no hard trim at the surface.

The base opens from the side

The top swings upward from the long side, with gas struts carrying the mattress as it rises, and what opens underneath is the bed's entire footprint as one lined compartment. There is nothing to pull out, nothing running on rails, and no panel needing clearance from a wall or a wardrobe door, so the bed can sit in a corner and still be loaded. Among divan beds that is the configuration that keeps working in a small room. A drawer divan wants clear floor beside it that a box room simply does not have, and it splits the space into four compartments, none of which takes a suitcase.

Six sizes, and the one for a tight gap

  • Small Single 2FT6: 75 cm wide by 191.5 cm long
  • Single 3FT: 90 cm by 191.5 cm
  • Small Double 4FT: 120 cm by 191.5 cm
  • Double 4FT6: 135 cm by 191.5 cm
  • King 5FT: 150 cm by 200 cm
  • Super King 6FT: 184 cm by 200 cm

At 191.5 cm the four smaller Montrose sizes take the shorter of the two lengths our ottoman divans are built to, 5 cm less than the Marlow in the same sizes, and the king and super king are 200 cm against the Marlow's 205 cm. If you are a few centimetres short of a bed fitting between a wall and a door, that is worth establishing before you compare the two on looks alone. Every figure above is the finished bed at its widest point, and the product page draws each size from the side and from above to one scale.

Headboard options and fabric

The listing includes a 54 inch floor standing headboard among the headboard options. On a divan base the mattress already sits high, so a tall board tends to hold the proportions better than a short one, though it is worth setting against your own wall height before you decide.

The Montrose is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, with headboard, base and sides all in the one cloth. Because the buttons are covered rather than crystal, a cloth with some pile earns its keep here. A Mocca Plush Velvet or a Charcoal Chenille gives each square a highlight and a shadow, where a flat Almond Coniston keeps the grid very subtle indeed. Ask us for samples if you are deciding between two.

Mattresses and delivery

Mattresses are sold separately, so you can match the tension to the sleeper rather than to the base. We sell beds in Glasgow from our store here and delivery is free within 50 miles of it, with a £50 charge further out. The Montrose product page carries the size guide, the colourways and the headboard options, and the rest of the range sits under ottoman divan beds.
