Neither set of figures is labelled on the listing, so treat the carton as a cross-section of 89 x 75cm rather than assuming which one is the height. Either way it is a parcel noticeably squatter than the finished sofa, and squatter is what gets round a turn in a stair.

The three measurements to take at home

The number that matters is the smallest cross-section of the carton, which for the two larger units is 89 x 75cm. Turned so that the 75cm dimension goes through the opening, the box needs a shade over 75cm of clear width.

1. Every door on the route. Measure the clear opening with the door held open, from the stop to the face of the open leaf, not across the frame. A common internal door leaf is 762mm, and once hinges and the stop are allowed for the real opening is often nearer 73cm, which is tighter than the carton. If yours is one of those, the handler needs to know in advance.
2. The stair turn. Measure the width of the landing at the turn and the headroom under the ceiling or the flight above. A 223cm carton has to swing, and the swing needs the diagonal of the landing.
3. The lift, if there is one. Internal depth and the door width, both. A carton 223cm long will not stand up in most lifts and will not lie flat in many.

Volume, and where the cartons wait

All three units together come to 3.341 CBM of packed volume. That is useful in two situations: judging whether a van you have borrowed will take the lot in one go, and working out where the boxes will sit if they arrive before the room is ready. A metre and a half of packed volume per large unit does not disappear into a hallway.

One thing the listing does not supply is weight. The gross weight is printed as a placeholder against all three units rather than a figure, so if the route involves stairs, ask the shop for the real weights before delivery day.
