Mirror Tray: what a 45 x 32cm top actually needs under it

Mirror Tray: what a 45 x 32cm top actually needs under it — Langham Furniture journal

Mirror Tray

View the product

Trays are usually bought too small. A tray that only just contains what you put on it looks like a saucer; one with a clear border around its contents reads as a deliberate arrangement. At 45 x 32cm, the Mirror Tray is the most generous in the Mirror Ornaments range, and that border is the reason to choose it.

45 x 32cm, and the surface that takes it

Put those figures against the furniture before anything else. Forty-five centimetres across is wider than most bedside tables, so this is a coffee table, console, sideboard or dressing table piece rather than a bedside one. Thirty-two centimetres front to back needs a top deeper than that, and a top of 40cm or so leaves only a narrow margin, which is fine against a wall and awkward on an island or anything walked past on both sides.

Where it earns the size is on a large coffee table. A 120cm table swallows small objects; a 45cm tray in the centre gives the remote, a candle and a book one address, and leaves two clear quarters of the table for cups and feet.

Two sizes in the copy, one set of figures in the listing

Being straight about a contradiction in the listing: the description says the tray comes in two sizes, and only one size is recorded against it, 45 x 32cm. What you will order from the product page is the size that is listed. If you want a smaller version of this tray specifically, ask us before ordering rather than assuming a second option exists behind the page.

No third figure: what to ask about the edge

Listed figureWhat it decides
45cmThe long side. Check the width of the surface and keep a margin.
32cmThe short side, front to back. Your top must be deeper than this.
No height givenAsk whether the tray has a raised rim, and how deep it is.

The missing figure is the one that changes how the tray behaves. A deep rim holds bottles upright and contains a spill; a flat mirrored panel with almost no lip is a surface rather than a container, and will not stop a rolling lipstick. The listing does not say which this is, so ask us, and also ask whether the underside is padded if the tray is going on a polished top. There are five photographs on the product page; look at those first, but a photograph rarely settles a rim depth, so ask if it matters to you.

What goes on it

The description points at jewellery, candles and decorative objects. In practice a tray this size takes a group rather than a single item, and a group wants different heights in it. The Candle Holder Small / Large gives you 20cm and 31cm options for exactly that, and the 1H Candle Holder stands 35cm if you want one clear vertical. Keep the number of objects low and the heights varied, and leave the mirrored border visible; the reflection is the point of the piece.

Ordering the Mirror Tray

If 45 x 32cm is more than your surface will take, the round Mirror Tray (Round) is listed at 28cm across and fits where this will not. Otherwise, the figures and photographs are on the Mirror Tray page. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.
