MD25 Wall Clock: a 100cm mirrored face and the wall it needs

MD25 Wall Clock: a 100cm mirrored face and the wall it needs — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

MD25 Wall Clock

View the product

The MD25 Wall Clock is listed at 33.6 x 9.5 x 100cm with a mirrored surface, which makes it one of the taller pieces in the clocks range. That height is the thing to plan around. A metre-tall clock behaves more like a narrow mirror on the wall than like a round dial, so the space above and below it matters as much as the space either side.

The measurements, exactly as listed

FigureWhat it probably refers to
33.6cmReads as the width across the wall
9.5cmReads as the projection from the wall
100cmReads as the height

The listing gives the three figures as 33.6 x 9.5 x 100cm and does not label which is which. The reading above is the one the shape suggests, but confirm it with the shop before you commit a measurement to a drawing or order a fixing for it.

Measuring the wall before you order

  • Mark the full outline in masking tape at the height you intend to hang it. A metre of tape on the wall tells you more in ten seconds than any amount of imagining.
  • Leave clear wall either side. A tall, narrow piece on an equally narrow pier of wall looks cramped, and it is the empty wall around it that makes the height read as deliberate.
  • Check the depth, once the shop has confirmed which figure it is. If 9.5cm is the projection, nearly 10cm off the wall is enough to catch a sleeve in a hallway, foul a door swing or sit awkwardly behind a curtain return, so measure the walkway as well as the wall.
  • Think about where the face sits relative to eye level. A clock you actually read wants the face in the eye-line of someone standing; a clock hung purely as a tall object can sit lower, closer to the furniture beneath it.

What a mirrored face does to the light

The listing describes a mirrored surface that reflects light through the room, and that cuts both ways. A mirror shows whatever is opposite it, so the face will pick up the window, the lamp or the doorway across from it. Directly facing a bright window, a mirrored dial can wash out at certain hours and become harder to read. Hung on the wall adjacent to the window instead, the same surface throws daylight back into the room without putting the sun behind the hands.

What the listing does not tell you

These are worth a quick message to the shop rather than a guess:

  • The movement. The listing does not state the type of movement, or whether it is battery powered.
  • The weight and the fixing. Nothing is stated about hanging hardware, so ask before you buy plugs and screws. The right fixing for plasterboard is not the right fixing for masonry, and a tall mirrored piece is not something to hang on a guess.
  • The frame material, and whether the reflective face is glass or acrylic.
  • The dial markings. Check the photographs on the MD25 Wall Clock page to see how the hours are marked.

What it sits with

If the proportion is wrong for your wall, the same mirrored idea comes in squarer formats. The SY906 is listed at 50 x 50cm and the SY901 at 40 x 40cm, both with a crushed diamond border, and the SY903 Wall Clock is a round face in a staggered mirrored frame. All of them sit in the wider mirrors and accessories range, so a clock can be matched to a mirror on the same wall.
