MD02 Floor Lamp: 158cm of diamond strips, and its footprint

MD02 Floor Lamp: 158cm of diamond strips, and its footprint — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

MD02 Floor Lamp

View the product

The MD02 Floor Lamp comes in one listed size, 47 x 47 x 158cm, and the description gives it diamond-patterned strips that catch the light. With a single size there is nothing to specify, so the only question worth a guide is whether 158cm of height and a 47cm square of floor suit the corner you have in mind.

Those read as width, depth and height for a floor lamp, giving a widest point about 47cm across at 158cm tall. The listing does not label them, and it does not describe a shade, a head or a base, so confirm with us if a centimetre of width decides it.

Where a 158cm lamp belongs

At 158cm this is a lamp you stand next to rather than look down on. The listing calls it ambient lighting and names reading areas, but it does not say which way the light is thrown, whether it is shaded or how bright it is, so ask us if it has to be the light you read by. What the height does reliably is fill a dim corner, the end of a sofa, or the gap beside a tall bookcase where a short lamp would disappear.

Two checks before you settle on the spot. Measure the headroom where it will actually stand, under a sloping ceiling or a stair bulkhead especially. And look at the lamp from the seats: anything 158cm tall placed beside a television is in your line of sight from the sofa.

47 x 47cm of floor, and the route in

  • The gap it has to fit. 47cm is nearly half a metre each way. Measure the space between a sofa arm and the wall, or between a chair and a radiator, and allow a little more than 47cm so it is not wedged.
  • The walkway past it. Keep roughly 60cm clear for people to pass, and remember a tall lamp in a tight route is the one that gets knocked.
  • The socket. Decide which socket it runs to and whether the lead crosses a doorway.
  • Getting it in. 158cm is longer than most doorways are wide, so check the turn at the top of a stair if it is going upstairs.

MD02 or DMD02?

The DMD02 Floor Lamp is listed at the same 47 x 47 x 158cm, so the two are interchangeable on measurements alone. What the listings separate is the surface: the MD02 is described as diamond-patterned strips, the DMD02 as a crushed diamond finish. That is a choice about appearance, and the photographs on each page will decide it better than either description. Neither listing states what the surfaces are made of, so if the material matters, ask us and we will check with the supplier.

What the listing does not say

The description is silent on the materials, the weight, the bulb type and count, whether a bulb is included, the switch position, the lead length and whether any assembly is needed. We have not filled any of that in here, because a guess about a bulb fitting is the kind of thing that leaves you standing in a shop with the wrong box. Ask us instead.

What it goes with

For a matching light at table height, the MD41/42 Table Lamp carries the same diamond strip idea at 43cm tall and 26cm across, in silver or rose gold, and the DMD12 Table Lamp is the taller table lamp at 71cm. Pairing one floor lamp with one table lamp lights a room at two heights, which is the point. See the rest on the lighting page.

If the corner measures up, the MD02 Floor Lamp page has the photographs and the full listing. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.
