Mayfair Bar Stool (Ring Knocker): ring or lion, and the fit — Langham Furniture journal

Mayfair Bar Stool (Ring Knocker)

View the product

The Mayfair Bar Stool (Ring Knocker) is upholstered in velvet on a chrome base, with a reinforced stitched back and a ring knocker detail. It is listed in dark grey, at one size: 64 x 60 x 100cm. This is the quieter of the two Mayfairs, and its figures are the biggest of any stool on our bar stools page.

Ring or lion

Two Mayfairs are listed at the same size, both on a chrome base and both described as velvet, though neither listing says the two fabrics are identical. The difference the listings draw is the hardware on the back. The listing describes the ring as visual interest that does not compromise the clean look, while the Mayfair Bar Stool (Lion Knocker) carries a lion.

Two practical points decide it more often than taste does. First, the colours: this ring version is listed in dark grey, and the lion version is listed in dark grey, silver grey and mink, so if you want anything other than dark grey it has to be the lion. Second, where the stools will be seen. At an island facing into a room, the back of a stool is on show all day, so a ring reads as a detail you notice up close and a lion reads as a feature from across the room.

The measurements, as listed

Position in the listingFigure
First64cm
Second60cm
Third100cm

The listing prints "64 x 60 x 100cm" without labelling the figures. The 100cm is almost certainly an overall height rather than a seat height, though the listing does not say what it is measured to. The 64cm and 60cm are the footprint, and the listing does not say which is the width and which the depth, so confirm that with us before you order. On a stool this size it is worth doing: 60cm is a lot of depth to give up in a galley kitchen, and the difference between 64cm and 60cm across the front changes how many will fit.

The seat height is not stated, and that is the figure that has to suit your counter. Do not take it from the 100cm, which is not labelled and which the listing does not break down between seat and back. Measure from your floor to the underside of the worktop, overhang and any trim included, then ask us for the seat height and compare the two. No swivel or gas lift is described in the listing, so treat the height as fixed.

How many fit a counter

  • Two stools take 128cm of counter, with no gap between them.
  • Three take 192cm.
  • Four take 256cm.

Add your own spacing on top, at each end and between each stool. Compare that with a narrower seat before you decide: the Chelsea Dark Grey Bar Stool is listed at 54 x 48 x 102cm and also carries a ring knocker, so three of those occupy 162cm where two Mayfairs occupy 128cm. If you need three seats on a short island, the Chelsea is the sensible answer even if you prefer the larger one. If you want a buttoned back instead of a stitched one, the Lewis 01 Dark Grey Bar Stool is listed at 58 x 50 x 98cm in dark grey.

Check overhead clearance too. If the 100cm is the overall height, a low pendant light hung over the end of an island can be in the way, so confirm the height before you order.

What to ask us about

This listing carries a single photograph, so if you want to see the ring detail, the stitching on the back or the velvet in daylight, ask us for more views before you order. The listing also gives no seat height, no weight limit, no rub rating for the velvet, no colour reference beyond dark grey and nothing about assembly.
