Lucca 1.2m Extending Dining Table: 85cm deep and what that means
This guide is about
Lucca 1.2m Extending Dining Table
The listing for the Lucca 1.2m Extending Dining Table is two lines of figures and nothing else: 120/150x85x78cm and 140/180x90x78cm. There is no description of the top, the base or the finish. So this post reads the figures, which are genuinely useful, and is straight with you about the rest.
What the figures mean
| As listed | Closed | Extended | Depth | Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120/150 x 85 x 78cm | 120cm | 150cm | 85cm | 78cm |
| 140/180 x 90 x 78cm | 140cm | 180cm | 90cm | 78cm |
The name refers to the 120/150cm table, so treat that as the one described here. The product page does not offer a size choice, so ask us which of the two sizes you can order before you pay, rather than reading it off the figures.
The two figures worth stopping on
85cm deep: narrower than most, and that is the point
Most rectangular dining tables here are 90cm or 100cm deep. This one is 85cm, and in a narrow room those 5cm are exactly the ones you were short of. A table at 85cm deep still takes a place setting on each side with a strip down the middle for a dish, and it leaves you more walkway in a galley kitchen or a through room.
What you give up is centre space. At 85cm there is room for a narrow runner of serving dishes, not a wide board and a candelabra. If you lay the table generously, a 90cm or 100cm top is the better buy.
78cm high: check your chairs
Most dining tables here are 75cm high. This one is listed at 78cm. With a chair seat at 45cm that leaves about 33cm of knee clearance, which is comfortable; with a seat at 42cm the table starts to feel high. If you already own the chairs, measure floor to seat top before you order. If you are buying chairs with it, tell us the table height and we will check the two together.
What it seats, and the floor it needs
On roughly 60cm of edge per place setting, the closed 120cm table seats four, and extended to 150cm it seats six if you use the ends. Allow about 100cm clear beyond the table edge on every side you will seat somebody, which is around 75cm to pull a chair back plus space to pass behind. That is a clear area of about 320 x 285cm closed and about 350 x 285cm extended. Tape the extended length out on the floor first, and check which way it grows: an extension that opens towards a doorway or a radiator blocks the room as soon as you use it.
What the listing does not say
- No top material, colour or finish is given. The photograph on the product page is the only guide and we can confirm what the current piece looks like.
- No base or leg description, so nothing on chair placement or where the support meets the floor.
- Nothing on the extension mechanism, or whether a leaf has to live somewhere else when the table is closed.
- No weight, no assembly note and nothing on packaging.
We would rather point at the gaps than fill them with a guess. Ask us and we will go and look at the piece.
What it sits with
The round piece in the same range is the Lucca 1.1m Round Extending Dining Table, 110cm opening to 150cm, and the range runs to a Lucca cross-back chair. For a rectangular extending table with a described top and base, the London Extending Dining Table (1.2-1.5/1.6-2m) covers the same lengths in more detail. Everything we hold is listed in Dining Tables.
Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. The Lucca 1.2m Extending Dining Table page carries the photograph and the order form.
