Linwood Upholstered Ottoman Bed

View the product

Ottoman beds are bought for one reason, and the Linwood answers it plainly. The mattress platform lifts on gas struts and the entire area beneath it opens as a single lined compartment, with no drawers, no runners and no dividing rail. The Linwood upholstered ottoman bed carries the same sunrise headboard as the rest of the Linwood beds, so storage is genuinely the only thing that changes.

Storage that does not show

This is a frame rather than a divan box, which is less common in an ottoman and is what keeps it looking like a bed. The sides are upholstered and shaped, so with the platform down there is no lid line, no gap at the corner and nothing to suggest the bed opens at all. Among ottoman beds that is the distinction worth paying attention to: a divan-box ottoman announces itself, a frame ottoman does not.

What the compartment will take depends on the size you choose and on the mattress you put in it, and the listing does not quote an internal depth. If you are buying the bed to swallow something particular, a suitcase, a box of decorations, a spare duvet and pillows, tell us what it is and which size you are considering, and we will check rather than estimate.

The headboard

Lines fanning upward from the lower corner in a sunrise, inside a plain border, upholstered in the same cloth as the base and the sides. One fabric covers the whole bed. That is the difference between a bed and a frame plus a headboard that nearly match, and on an ottoman it matters more than usual, because the headboard is doing all of the decorating while everything below the mattress is given over to storage.

Five sizes

Measured across the finished bed at its widest point:

  • Single 3FT: 99 cm wide by 212 cm long
  • Small Double 4FT: 127 cm by 212 cm
  • Double 4FT6: 143.5 cm by 212 cm
  • King 5FT: 158 cm by 222 cm
  • Super King 6FT: 189 cm by 222 cm

With any lifting platform there is a second measurement nobody takes: the one upward. The platform swings above the bed as it opens, so check whether anything fixed at the head end or along the side would be in its way, a shelf, a sloping ceiling, a low window reveal, and ask us which way the size you want opens before you plan the room around it. The product page has the bed drawn from the side and from above at every size.

The cloth, and what pile does to the pattern

The Linwood is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, headboard, base and sides all in the one cloth. The choice spans flat weaves such as Armour Coniston and Blue Coniston, the Naples cloths including Slate Grey Naples and Cream Naples, chenilles such as Silver Chenille, and plush velvets from Blue Plush Velvet to Mink Plush Velvet. Pile makes the sunrise pattern more visible; a flat weave keeps it subtle. Samples are worth asking for.

Who it suits

A good number of the people buying beds in Scotland from us live in flats with no loft and no cupboard to spare, and this is the bed that answers that: it puts storage where the bed already stands, rather than asking a small room to find space for another piece of furniture. It also suits a spare bedroom that has to double as the place everything gets put, and a main bedroom where a chest of drawers would block the only sensible walking route.

Mattresses and delivery

Mattresses are sold separately, so tension is your decision rather than the frame's. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond it. Size, fabric and headboard are all set on the Linwood ottoman product page, and the rest of the lifting frames sit under upholstered ottoman beds.
