Linwood Upholstered Bed: the Sunrise Headboard in Five Sizes

Linwood Upholstered Bed: the Sunrise Headboard in Five Sizes — Langham Furniture journal

Linwood Upholstered Bed

View the product

The Linwood is an upholstered bed frame with nothing stored in the base, and that is the point of it. A solid base lets the bed sit low and puts the whole design into the headboard, which is lines fanning upward from the lower corner in a sunrise, inside a plain border. The Linwood upholstered bed page shows it in each of the 26 colourways.

What a frame gives you that a box does not

On a divan the mattress sits on top of a fabric-covered base. On the Linwood it drops down inside an upholstered surround, so the side rails and foot end stand slightly proud of the mattress. Three things follow. The bed is lower overall. The upholstery shows all the way round rather than only at the base. And the mattress is contained on three sides, which is why fitted sheets stay put on a frame and creep on a box.

What you give up is the space underneath. Divan beds, and ottoman divan beds in particular, turn that volume into a lined compartment. The Linwood leaves it as floor. For a spare room, a bedroom with fitted wardrobes, or anyone who would rather clean under a bed than fill it, that is the better trade. If it is not, the same sunrise headboard appears on the Linwood ottoman, where the platform lifts.

Five sizes, with one jump worth noticing

  • Single 3FT: 99 cm wide by 212 cm long
  • Small Double 4FT: 127 cm by 212 cm
  • Double 4FT6: 143.5 cm by 212 cm
  • King 5FT: 158 cm by 222 cm
  • Super King 6FT: 189 cm by 222 cm

Every figure is the finished bed at its widest point. The three smaller sizes are 212 cm long and the king and super king are 222 cm, and that 10 cm is often what decides whether a bedroom door still clears the foot of the bed. The step from double to king adds 14.5 cm of width as well, so a room that takes a 4FT6 comfortably is not automatically a king room.

Measuring the room, in order

  • The width of the wall the headboard will sit against, less skirting and any radiator pipework.
  • The length out from that wall: 212 cm, or 222 cm for a king or super king.
  • Door swings, wardrobe doors and drawer fronts, measured open rather than closed.
  • The route in: doorways, stair turns, and any ceiling slope over a landing.
  • Walking room down at least one side, which is easier to judge by standing in the gap than by writing down a number.

There is a full size guide on the product page with the bed drawn from the side and from above, every size to the same scale, which beats converting figures in your head.

Twenty-six colourways, one cloth

Every upholstered part is finished in the fabric you pick: headboard, base and sides. The 26 run through flat weaves such as Almond Coniston and Armour Coniston, the Linoso and Naples cloths including Silver Linoso and Seal Grey Naples, chenilles such as Black Chenille, and plush velvets from Mocca Plush Velvet to Steel Plush Velvet.

Because this headboard is a pattern rather than a plain panel, pile changes how much of it you see. A velvet picks the sunrise out in light and shade and reads darker under a warm bulb. A flat weave keeps the pattern quieter and stays closer to its swatch under any light. Samples are the only honest way to settle it, and we can get them to you.

Mattress and delivery

Mattresses are sold separately so the frame and the tension stay separate decisions. We sell beds in Glasgow from our store here, and delivery is free within 50 miles of it and £50 beyond.

Size, fabric and headboard are all configured on the Linwood product page, and the other frames built this way are collected under upholstered beds. If something you need to know is not on the listing, ask us instead of guessing at it.
