The Linwood Kids Upholstered Bed: A Sunrise Headboard at Child Scale

The Linwood Kids is an upholstered bed frame drawn to a child's scale rather than a shrunken adult bed. There is no storage in the base, which leaves the headboard to carry the character: lines fanning upward from the lower corner in a sunrise, held inside a plain border. Why the headboard matters more on a child's bed

A child's room is usually the smallest in the house and the bed is the largest thing in it. On a frame with no box underneath, the headboard is the only part doing any decorating, so the pattern has to read from across the room rather than reward close inspection. The sunrise does that. It is a shape first and a texture second, and it is recognisable from the doorway.

The board is upholstered in the same cloth as the sides and the foot end. That sounds like a minor point until you have lived with a frame and a separate headboard in two batches of fabric that nearly match. Here one cloth covers everything, so the bed arrives as a single piece.

A frame, not a divan

The mattress drops down inside an upholstered surround instead of sitting on top of a fabric-covered box. The bed is lower as a result, which matters while a small child is still climbing in and out unaided, and the side rails give a fitted sheet something to tuck against.

The three sizes

Measured across the finished bed at its widest point:

• Single 3FT: 99 cm wide by 212 cm long
• Small Double 4FT: 127 cm wide by 212 cm long
• Double 4FT6: 143.5 cm wide by 212 cm long

Those are outside dimensions, not mattress sizes, and the length is what catches people out. All three are 212 cm long, because the upholstered surround and the headboard both add depth beyond the mattress inside. Measure 212 cm out from the wall you have in mind, then look hard at what is left: a door swing, a radiator, a wardrobe that needs to open fully.

A small double is worth considering in a child's room if the floor takes it. It is 28 cm wider than the single, which is enough for a teenager to sit with a friend, and it does not change the length you have to find.

Choosing from 26 colourways

The bed is upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, and every part finished in cloth is done in the one you choose. The list runs from flat weaves such as Almond Coniston and Silver Linoso, through chenilles including Charcoal Chenille and Cream Chenille, to plush velvets from Pink Plush Velvet to Steel Plush Velvet.

Two thoughts specific to a child's room. A velvet shows a handprint and brushes back; a flat weave hides marks better but does not recover a nap the same way. And a colour picked at seven has to survive being eleven, so a calm base cloth with the colour in the bedding tends to outlast the opposite arrangement.
