Lewis Dark Grey Bench: choosing between 110, 130 and 160cm

Lewis Dark Grey Bench: choosing between 110, 130 and 160cm — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Lewis Dark Grey Bench 110/130/160cm

View the product

The Lewis Dark Grey Bench is listed in three lengths. Depth and height stay the same across all of them, so the choice is purely about how much floor you give up and how many people need a seat. It is a piece we supply rather than make, and the figures below are its own.

The three lengths, and which one fits

OptionAs the listing gives itRealistic seating
110cm110 x 48 x 50cmOne adult plus a bag, or two at close quarters
130cm130 x 48 x 50cmTwo adults side by side
160cm160 x 48 x 50cmTwo with room to spare, three at a push

Read in that order the three figures would be length, depth and height, which would put the seat at 50cm, but the listing does not label them. Confirm the order with the shop if a centimetre either way decides whether it fits, or if the seat height is what matters.

  • Hallway. The 110cm is the one that usually works here. Check the 48cm depth against your hall width first, then check it clears the swing of the front door and any cupboard door beside it.
  • Foot of the bed. A UK double is 135cm wide, a king 150cm and a super king 180cm. The 130cm sits inside a double, the 160cm overhangs a king by a few centimetres each side and tucks neatly inside a super king.
  • Living room. Under a window, or kept to one side and pulled over as extra seating when people come. At 48cm deep it will not block a radiator entirely, but it will sit in front of one, so think about where the heat goes.
  • Under a table. If 50cm is the seat height, it sits higher than a typical dining chair. Measure floor to the underside of the table top, and have the shop confirm the seat height, before you commit to it as dining seating.

Measure before you order

  1. Mark the length out on the floor with masking tape and walk the route past it a few times before you commit.
  2. Subtract the 48cm depth from the width of the space and check the walkway left is still comfortable.
  3. Check the route in, not just the destination: doorways, a stair turn and a tight landing are what stop a 160cm piece, not the room it is going into.
  4. Look at skirting boards and pipework. Nothing in the listing says whether the frame can sit flush to a wall.

What the listing covers, and what it leaves out

It gives you dark grey velvet upholstery, chrome legs and the three lengths. It does not give the velvet's fibre content or cleaning code, any weight limit, whether the feet carry floor protectors, or whether it arrives assembled. One worth asking specifically: the 160cm is half a metre longer than the 110cm, and the listing does not say whether the leg arrangement changes or what supports the middle of the longer one. Ask the shop, along with the current lead time.

The nearest alternatives

If you need more length than 160cm, the Chelsea Dark Grey Bench 130/180cm goes to 180cm in a similar dark grey. For a lighter shade at the same depth and height, there is the Lewis Silver Grey Bench 130/160cm, and the Lewis Mink Bench 110cm if grey is not the colour you are after. The full benches range sits inside our living room section.
