Lewis Console Table: 1.2m on four legs, and how to measure for it

Lewis Console Table: 1.2m on four legs, and how to measure for it — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Lewis Console Table

View the product

The Lewis Console Table is the four-leg console in this group: a chrome frame, four contemporary-styled legs and a listed size of 120 x 40 x 75cm. At 1.2m it is one of the longer consoles here, which makes it the easiest one to plan a wall around and the easiest one to get wrong in a narrow hall.

The figures read as width, depth and height, and the listing's own description of it as a 1.2m console backs that up. Ask us to confirm the order of the figures if the piece has to land between two fixed points.

Four legs or a pedestal

This is the real decision in a console at this size, and it is not only about looks.

  • Four legs put weight on four points, which is more forgiving on a floor that is not perfectly flat, and they divide the space underneath into one clear bay. A bench, a shoe tray or a basket either fits that bay or it does not, and the listing does not give the gap between the legs, so ask us for it if you plan to slide something under.
  • A pedestal leaves the ends of the underside open, so things can tuck in from either side. The Chelsea Console Table is the pedestal version at the same listed size if you want to compare the two.

Skirting matters either way. A deep skirting holds any console a centimetre or two off the wall, so measure your skirting depth and add it to the 40cm when you work out how far the table will stand into the room. The listing does not say how close the legs sit to the ends of the frame, so check the photographs if a leg landing over a skirting return would be a problem.

Measuring the wall

Run a tape along the full length of the wall first, at table height rather than at floor level, because skirting, pipe boxing and a bowed old wall all change the figure. Then check these:

  • The gap left at each end of 120cm, so the table is not jammed against an architrave.
  • Sockets and switches at or near 75cm, which a console back will cover.
  • Door swing, including the front door and any cupboard door on that run.
  • What hangs above. Leave a clear gap between the surface and the bottom of a mirror or picture, and remember a lamp needs headroom on top of that.

Then mark the footprint on the floor with tape, walk the route you normally walk, and see whether 40cm of depth is as modest as it sounds.

Lewis and SG-Lewis, side by side

There is a near-twin in the range. The SG-Lewis Console Table is also listed at 120 x 40 x 75cm, also on four contemporary-style legs, also with a chrome frame, and also offering marble or ceramic tops. The two descriptions differ in wording rather than in any published dimension, and they carry different codes: AWS-LEWIS59 here, AWS-LEWIS099 there. The honest answer is that the photographs on each page are the reliable way to see the difference, and that we will put the question to the supplier if you ask.

What to confirm before you order

  • The top. Marble and ceramic are both named, but there is no option on the page to select one, so have us confirm which surface your order carries.
  • Weight and access. No weight is published. Tell us if there is a stair, a turn or a narrow door on the route.
  • Assembly. The listing does not say whether the legs and frame arrive fitted or flat.
  • Care. No cleaning guidance is given, and it differs between a stone and a ceramic surface.

If 1.2m turns out to be too long once the tape is down, the shorter consoles are listed at 85 x 34 x 70cm, including the Torino Console Table, and everything sits together in console tables for comparison.

Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond. When your measurements are settled, the gallery on the Lewis Console Table page shows the frame and legs in detail, and we will answer the top, weight and assembly questions before you place the order rather than after.
