Kingsley ottoman divan bed: tufting framed by a wide plain border
This guide is about
Kingsley Ottoman Divan Bed
The Kingsley takes a familiar idea and holds something back. Its headboard is deep diamond tufting, buttoned in the same cloth rather than in crystal, and it is held inside a notably wide plain border. The tufting is the pattern; the border is the frame that stops the pattern running to the edges. That restraint is the whole design, and it is what makes the Kingsley an easier bed to put in an ordinary bedroom than a board that sparkles.
Self-buttoned, not crystal
A tufted board buttoned in its own cloth reads as texture. The same board with crystal buttons reads as jewellery. Both have their place, and the choice is less about taste than about what else is in the room. If the bedroom already has a mirrored chest, a glass lamp or a patterned wall, a self-buttoned board is the one that will not compete. If you want the sparkle, there are crystal-buttoned boards elsewhere in our ottoman divan beds range to compare it against.
The wide border matters more than it sounds. On most tufted headboards the diamonds run almost to the edge, which makes the board look busy from the door. Giving the tufting a broad plain surround contains it, and in a small room that is the difference between a bed that fills the wall and a bed that sits on it.
The headboard, base and sides are all upholstered in the cloth you choose, so the bed arrives as one piece rather than a frame and a board that nearly match. A 54-inch floor-standing headboard is offered on the selector if you want more height, and with this design the extra height mostly buys you more border, which is no bad thing.
What is under the mattress
Everything under the mattress is storage. The whole base lifts: gas struts carry the weight, the top swings up from the side, and the full footprint of the bed opens as a single lined compartment. There are no drawers, no runners and nothing that has to clear a wall or a wardrobe door, so the bed can live in a corner and still give you all of it.
That is the practical case for ottoman beds over drawer bases, and it is worth saying plainly what you give up: you cannot open it casually, and anything you need every day wants to be somewhere else. Bedding, cases, seasonal clothes and the things with no proper home are what this space is for.
The six sizes
Measured across the finished bed at its widest point:
- Small Single 2FT6 is 75cm wide and 196.5cm long
- Single 3FT is 90cm wide and 196.5cm long
- Small Double 4FT is 120cm wide and 196.5cm long
- Double 4FT6 is 135cm wide and 196.5cm long
- King 5FT is 150cm wide and 205cm long
- Super King 6FT is 184cm wide and 205cm long
Note the length: 196.5cm up to a double, 205cm at king and super king. Rooms are usually tight along their length rather than across, so that is the figure to check against the wall-to-door run before you fall for a super king. The product page has a size guide drawn from the side and from above with every size to the same scale.
Fabric, and what else to order
Twenty-six colourways are offered, upholstered to order, and they divide roughly into the textured weaves such as Coniston and Chenille, the flatter Naples and Linoso shades, and the Plush Velvets. Self-buttoned tufting shows best where the cloth has some depth to shade across each pleat, so the velvets and the heavier weaves flatter it most. A flat pale cloth will soften the diamonds until they are barely there.
Mattresses are sold separately, which keeps the decision in your hands rather than ours; browse our mattresses and choose the tension you would actually sleep on. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond that, and plenty of our beds in Scotland go out past that radius, so put your postcode in at checkout and the charge will be shown before you pay.
Sizes, fabrics, the headboard options and the size guide are all on the Kingsley listing.
