Harcourt ottoman divan bed: diamanté buttons, deep tufting and full-footprint storage

Some beds are quiet. The Harcourt is not trying to be. Its headboard is deep diamond tufting set with a crystal diamanté button at every point where the diamonds meet, so the board catches a bedside lamp at a hundred small points. Underneath, it is a straightforward ottoman divan bed: everything below the mattress is storage.

Who deep tufting and crystal buttons are for

Be clear-eyed about this one. A diamanté-buttoned board is a centrepiece, and it works best in a room that is otherwise calm: plain walls, plain bedding, one good lamp each side. Put it against patterned wallpaper and the two will fight. Put it in a room with a mirrored chest and it looks like it was planned.

The tufting is deep, which means real pleats rather than a pressed pattern, and the buttons sit where the diamonds intersect, so the sparkle follows the geometry instead of being scattered about. The headboard is upholstered in the same cloth as the rest of the bed, so the bed arrives as one piece rather than a frame and a board that nearly match. A 54-inch floor-standing headboard is offered on the selector, which takes the tufting down towards the skirting and roughly doubles the amount of pattern you see.

The storage, in plain terms

The whole base lifts. Gas struts take the weight of the mattress and the top swings up from the side, opening the full footprint of the bed as one lined compartment. There are no drawers, no runners and nothing that has to clear a wall or a wardrobe door. It is the most storage you can get under a bed of this size, and it is still reachable with the bed pushed into a corner.

In a room with a decorative bed, that hidden capacity is doing a second job: it is where everything that would otherwise sit about on the floor goes, which is what keeps the calm backdrop the headboard needs.

On a bed with a statement headboard there is a second measurement worth taking: the clear wall above the mattress. A 54-inch floor-standing board needs that wall uninterrupted by a socket, a switch or a radiator, and it is easier to find that out with a tape measure than with a delivery crew standing in the hall. Fabrics that suit crystal buttons

Twenty-six colourways are offered, upholstered to order. Crystal buttons want depth behind them, which is why the Plush Velvets, Black, Charcoal, Steel, Mocca and Mink among them, are the obvious partners: the pile shades from light to dark across each pleat and the buttons read as highlights. The flatter cloths such as Naples and Linoso make a cooler, more restrained version of the same bed, and in a bright room that can be the better call. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond that, so most of the central belt is covered without a charge.
