View the product

The G-Mayfair Gold Dining Table (1.8m) is listed in a single size, 180 x 90 x 75cm, read as 180cm long, 90cm deep and 75cm high. The listing describes a gold frame on four sculptural legs it calls Art Deco-inspired, and says the table suits six to eight guests.

Four legs change where people sit

This is the practical difference between this table and the pedestal and two-leg tables in the dining tables range, and it is worth thinking about before the finish or the top.

  • Chairs land in fixed positions rather than sliding anywhere along the edge, so you cannot squeeze an extra place in between two others.
  • A bench on one long side is unlikely to tuck fully under unless the legs are set well in from the ends. The listing does not give that inset, so ask.
  • A sculptural leg takes up floor space near each end of the table, which is where people put their own feet. Ask for the width of the leg at the base as well as the inset.

None of that is a fault. Four legs give every chair a settled place, which is what you want if you are buying six or eight matching chairs and intend them to stay where they are put. What the listing does not say is whether those legs stand right at the corners or inboard of them, which is why both questions above matter before you plan the seating.

What 180 x 90cm seats

The listing's six to eight tallies with the measurements. Reckon on about 60cm of table edge per place setting:

ArrangementEdge eachNotes
Fourabout 90cmGenerous, and the middle stays clear
Six, long sides onlyabout 60cmThe everyday setting, subject to the leg positions
Eight, using both endsabout 60cmWorks at 90cm deep, if the end chairs can pull back

The floor space, and the route in

Allow roughly 75cm out from each edge for a chair in use, and about 100cm wherever somebody has to walk behind a seated guest.

  • Chairs on the long sides only: about 180 x 240cm of clear floor.
  • Chairs all round: about 330 x 240cm.
  • Walkways on every side: nearer 380 x 290cm.

Then measure the way in. A 180cm top does not flex, so take the narrowest point of the hall, any turn on the stairs, and the clear width of the doorway with the door open.

Ask which top you are getting

The listing offers the table with either a marble top, described as having dramatic veining and natural variation, or a ceramic surface. The product page itself presents no options at all, neither a size nor a choice of top, so before you order ask the shop which top the table comes with and ask for photographs of the actual piece. With marble in particular the pattern will differ from the photograph by definition.

Also unstated: the thickness and weight of the top, the metal under the gold finish, how warm that gold reads in daylight, and any cleaning advice for a stone surface. A metallic finish is worth seeing in person if you can get to the store.

The tables to compare

The G-Jessica Dining Table (1.6/1.8m) is the other gold option at this length and adds a 160cm size, with an angular frame instead of four legs. The Chelsea Dining Table (1.5/1.8/2m) is the chrome equivalent in three lengths, and the GS-Madrid Dining Table (1.8/2m) is the one to look at if you might want 2m.
