Black Decking 85E: the full order list, edges and corners

Black Decking 85E: the full order list, edges and corners — Langham Furniture journal

This guide is about

Decking 85E - Black - Outdoor - 290cm - (1 pack / 4pcs)

View the product

The boards are the easy part of a decking order. What catches people out is everything else the pack does not contain. Decking 85E in black is listed at 15 x 290 x 2.3cm per board, four boards to a pack, covering 1.74m², and the fixings are separate lines.

Read the figures as width, length and thickness. Four boards at 0.15m by 2.90m is 1.74m², which is the coverage the listing quotes, but confirm the order with the shop before you cut to a drawing.

The order list

  1. Boards. Area in metres divided by 1.74, rounded up, plus a margin for cuts.
  2. Clips. The listing names Decking Fittings (80pcs), which slide into the grooves in the decking.
  3. Screws. The clips pack states that screws are not included, so they come from somewhere else.
  4. Trim for exposed edges. The listing names the Wall Panel 73/83 Trim - 290cm.
  5. Whatever the deck sits on. The listing says nothing about a substructure, which makes it a question for the shop rather than an assumption.

Two things that decide the order are in none of the listings: whether the clips set a gap between boards and how wide it would be, and how many clips a pack of boards takes. Both change the count. Ask for them with your measurements in hand.

Edges and corners

A deck that stops in mid-air at a step or a raised edge looks unfinished without a trim, and the board thickness is only 23mm, so the edge is visible from any seat. The straight trim named above covers a run. For an external angle there is a Wall Panel 73/83 Corner Trim - 290cm in the same numbering, which the decking listing does not itself name, so have the shop confirm it suits a decking edge before you add it. Neither trim listing states which colours it comes in: that matters more with black than with any other shade in the range, where a near miss shows.

Both faces, and the wording on grip

The board is described as reversible, with a wood grain finish on one side and a ribbed texture the listing calls anti-slip on the other. No slip rating or test figure is quoted for the ribbed face, wet or dry, so if it is going on a step or a slope, ask whether the supplier holds any data rather than relying on the word. Beyond composite, weather resistant and UV resistant, the listing gives no weight, no span and no joist spacing.

Black with the rest of the range

Black is the darkest of the five shades, and it is the one to pick if you want contrast, either against a lighter field of boards or against planting. The same board is listed in Khaki and Grey at identical dimensions, so a two-tone layout needs no extra planning. See all of them in Decking and the fixings in outdoor trims and fittings.
