Mirrored Coasters: 10cm square, and six or twelve per pack — Langham Furniture journal

Coasters are bought by the handful and then found to be the wrong count, because the number you need is not the number of people who live in the house. The mirrored Coaster set comes in two pack sizes, six or twelve, and the listing gives each piece as 10 x 10cm square. This post is about picking the pack and about the one thing the listing does not tell you.

10cm square: what actually sits on one

Ten centimetres is a useful size to picture. A mug base normally sits well inside 10cm, so it lands on the square with a margin to spare, and a wine glass foot is smaller again. A pint glass or a tall tumbler with a wide base is where 10cm starts to be tight, and a teapot or a jug will overhang it, which is worth knowing before you order a set to protect a table top.

The listing gives two figures only, 10 x 10cm, with no thickness. If you are sliding these into a drawer with a tight clearance, or stacking them in a holder, ask us to measure the thickness for you.

Six or twelve: counting the table

Count the places you set, then add the places you serve.

Where they are goingUsually the right pack
Two or four seats, drinks onlyPack of six
Six seats, with a jug or a pot on the tablePack of twelve
Six seats plus a coffee table in the next roomPack of twelve
A set kept for guests, with spares for breakagesPack of twelve

The pack size is chosen on the product page. Mirrored pieces are the sort of thing you want a spare of, so if you are near the line between the two, the larger pack is the one that still looks complete after an accident.

Heat: ask before you assume

This is the part worth being straight about. The description says the coasters give practical protection for your surfaces, and that is all it says. There is no statement anywhere in the listing about how a mirrored surface handles a hot mug, a teapot or a hot dish, and this post is not going to invent one. If you want them for hot drinks rather than cold, ask us to confirm what the supplier says before you order.

What the listing does describe

The description sets out a mirrored surface with crushed diamond detailing on each piece, chosen for the way it catches light on a table. It does not give the material behind the mirror, the weight, or whether there is any backing on the underside, which is the usual thing that stops a coaster marking a polished top. Two photographs are on the product page.

Setting a table with them

They sit in the same family as the Placemat set, which the mirrored range also carries, and the 24-piece MS085 Circle Coaster set if you want round rather than square. A 4H Love Tealight Holder down the middle keeps the table centre low. The rest of the Mirror Ornaments range is here.

Choose six or twelve on the Coaster (6 or 12pcs) page. Delivery is free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond.
