Clarendon Wingback Ottoman Divan Bed: Six Sizes and a Base That Opens
This guide is about
Clarendon Wingback Ottoman Divan Bed
The Clarendon is the wingback in the range, and the wings are not only a style. The centre of the headboard is narrow vertical channels; at each side a tall smooth wing angles forward, which draws the bed in around the pillows and takes a little of the draught out of a room with a cold external wall behind the bed.
Under the mattress there is no decoration at all, because all of it is storage. The Clarendon wingback ottoman divan bed is made to order in six sizes and 26 colourways.
How much storage, and in what shape
The whole base lifts. Gas struts take the weight of the mattress and the top swings up from the side, opening the full footprint of the bed as one lined compartment. It is a single space rather than two or four drawer-sized ones, which is the point: a folded duvet, a suitcase or a stack of winter coats goes in whole without being divided up.
It also explains why ottoman beds and drawer divan beds suit different rooms. Drawers want clear floor beside or beyond them; this opens upwards, so it works pushed into a corner or hard against a wardrobe. What it does want is headroom and somewhere to stand on one long side.
Six sizes, as finished measurements
- Small Single 2FT6: 79 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- Single 3FT: 94 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- Small Double 4FT: 124 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- Double 4FT6: 139 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
- King 5FT: 154 cm wide by 205 cm long
- Super King 6FT: 188 cm wide by 205 cm long
Each figure is the finished bed at its widest point, wings included, so measure to those rather than to the mattress size. The step from a 4FT6 double to a king adds 15 cm across and about 8.5 cm in length; a super king adds another 34 cm of width. On a storage bed that width is not only sleeping space, since the compartment grows with the bed. The size guide on the product page shows all six from the side and from above at one scale.
The cloth, and what the channels do to it
There are 26 colourways across Coniston, Naples, Chenille, Plush Velvet and Linoso, and the headboard, base and sides are all finished in the one you choose. Channelled upholstery catches light down each flute, so the headboard looks quite different in a Plush Velvet, where every channel reads, than in a flat Naples or Linoso, where the shape is calm. If two shades look identical on a screen, that is worth a conversation rather than a guess.
Living with it
Practical notes that apply to any ottoman: load the compartment with things you need occasionally rather than nightly, keep the mattress the size the bed is built for so the lid closes properly, and lift with the struts rather than against them. Mattresses here are sold separately, so you can match the tension to how you sleep instead of taking whatever came with the base.
We deliver right across Scotland and further afield, free within 50 miles of our Glasgow store and £50 beyond that. To compare the wings against the other headboards in the same cloths, look through the ottoman divan bed range, then take the sizes and colourways from the Clarendon's own page.
