The side lift, and why corners stop mattering

The whole base lifts. Gas struts take the weight of the mattress and the top swings up from the side, opening the full footprint of the bed as one lined compartment. There are no drawers, no runners and nothing that has to clear a wall or a wardrobe door, which is exactly why ottoman beds behave differently from drawer divan beds in a small room. Push this bed into a corner and you still have all of its storage.

Being honest about the lift: it is an adult's job rather than a child's, struts or no struts. Treat the space as bedding, spare duvets and the toys that come out at weekends, rather than as the place a six-year-old is expected to tidy into every night.

What to check before ordering

• Headroom above the bed, since the lid travels up and over. Sloped ceilings and low sills are the usual culprits.
• Standing room on one long side to lift from.
• The route in: doorway width, landing space and any turn on the stairs.

Finished sizes, measured across the bed at its widest point:

• Small Single 2FT6: 79 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
• Single 3FT: 94 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
• Small Double 4FT: 124 cm wide by 196.5 cm long
• Double 4FT6: 139 cm wide by 196.5 cm long

The storage follows the footprint, so a 4FT or 4FT6 gives noticeably more underneath than the 2FT6. That is the trade to weigh: a narrower bed buys walkway, a wider one buys storage. Twenty-six colourways

Upholstered to order in any of 26 colourways, across the Coniston, Naples, Chenille, Plush Velvet and Linoso cloths, with the headboard, base and sides all in the cloth you pick. The channels on this headboard read strongest in a fabric with a sheen, so Plush Velvet in Pink, Blue or Steel shows the shape, while Mink Naples or Charcoal Coniston keeps it subtle. The included headboard is the 54 inch one, which gives a child something solid to sit up against.
